Sam Darnold’s path back for the Seahawks is starting to come into focus, and the early read points to a stint on the sideline that could stretch into a few weeks rather than just a missed game or two.
The latest update came Tuesday morning on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” where league insider Mike Garafolo said the expectation is roughly a four-week return-to-play window for the Seattle quarterback. Garafolo added that Darnold could be back sooner, but emphasized that both he and the Seahawks are treating this as a “very unique soft-tissue glute injury.”
“From my understanding,” Garafolo said about Darnold, “you're looking at about a four-week return to play. Could potentially be a little bit sooner than that.
But a very unique soft-tissue glute injury is my understanding and the Seahawks' understanding, as well. So looking like the timeline's gonna be right in line with a couple of weeks here for Sam Darnold.
But return to play in the near future.”
Darnold was hurt on Seattle’s opening possession in the Week 1 win over the New England Patriots on Sept. 9, a 13-10 game the Seahawks were able to finish without him. He did not return after leaving that contest.
For now, the signs point to Drew Lock handling the offense in Darnold’s place. Lock took the bulk of the snaps against New England and completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards, one touchdown and no turnovers in the victory.
That would put him in line to start against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 20 and again versus the Washington Commanders on Sept. 27.
Seattle’s Week 4 game comes at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 4.
There was already some skepticism Monday night about a quick turnaround. NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggested Darnold may end up missing more than “a couple of weeks” because the Seahawks are likely to be careful with him.
“The thinking is [the Seahawks will] be cautious with Darnold, given that their team is good enough to win without him - and given the risk that he could suffer an aggravation that extends his absence,” Florio wrote.
Florio also noted that Seattle could try to “keep the Cardinals guessing as to whether it will be Darnold or Drew Lock on Sunday.” As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Seahawks as 4.5-point road favorites in Arizona.

LaFleur went a step further by comparing McBrides ability to control the pace of a play to Luka Doncic, which is rare company for any pass catcher.
