The Arizona Cardinals are heading into Friday night’s preseason finale with the important names staying on the sideline. Against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, the Cardinals will keep their starters out, leaving the game to backups, rookies, and the players trying to win one of the final roster spots before cutdown day.
That includes rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, who is still dealing with an ankle injury. At quarterback, only Gardner Minshew and Kedon Slovis will play. Rookie Carson Beck has not thrown a pass in recent practices while recovering from the rib injury he suffered in the Hall of Fame Game, and Jacoby Brissett, the starting quarterback, will not even suit up.
There is one possible exception to the no-starters rule: defensive end Josh Sweat. He has not been practicing and has not taken a snap in the other three exhibition games, but he could see a couple of series Friday night. Head coach Mike LaFleur said of Sweat:
“It was great to have him out there. When you get some of those pieces out there, you can feel it with the other guys, too.
They were happy to see him again. He’s according to plan.
It’s right on schedule in terms of when he was going to get out there. He’ll be out there again today doing some individual drills, and we’ll just kind of take it one practice at a time.”
Friday’s matchup has a little extra flavor because it’s the first “LaFleur Bowl.” It could also be called the “Melton Bowl,” with Cardinals cornerback Max Melton and Packers receiver Bo Melton set to be on opposite sides. Mike LaFleur will coach against his older brother Matt for the first time as an NFL head coach, though the brothers have met twice before when Mike was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.
The game itself is all about jobs. The Cardinals will use it to sort through the bottom end of the roster, with the deadline for 53-man cuts arriving Sunday, August 30. Teams can carry as many as 90 players in camp right now, and the final preseason game is where bubble players usually get one last chance to make their case.
Among those trying to do just that is backup punter Jack Browning, who spent this past spring with the Orlando Storm of the UFL.
The Cardinals and Packers kick off at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, 4:00 p.m.

Jordan Love pointed to a failed series from the five-yard line as the roughest moment of the day, a reminder that even in camp work, execution inside the red zone can expose a lot about where a team stands.

Cardinals Suddenly Have Two New Roster Questions Before Preseason Finale
The Cardinals had to make a pair of quick roster moves this week, bringing in punter Jack Browning and safety Josh Minkins as they work through the final stretch of preseason. Browning arrives with a background that includes time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Orlando Storm, and he is stepping into punting duties while Blake Gillikin is sidelined by injury.
Minkins, who also comes over from the Orlando Storm, adds needed depth in the secondary as Arizona sorts through injuries at several spots before its preseason finale.
