ARIZONA - When the Cardinals needed a spark at the goal line, Jeremiyah Love was on the sideline.
That choice became the story after Arizona’s 36-24 loss to the New York Giants in Week 4 at MetLife Stadium, a finish that turned ugly fast. Down 30-24 with 22 seconds left, the Cardinals had first-and-goal from the Giants’ four-yard line and one timeout. Instead of leaning on the rookie back who had already run for 63 yards on 14 carries, Arizona went with veteran Tyler Allgeier.
The result was a stalled final sequence: Jacoby Brissett threw three straight incompletions, and the game ended with a pick-six.
The absence of Love on those final snaps lit up social media after the game, and for good reason. One of Arizona’s more explosive pieces never got the chance to touch the ball when the Cardinals were trying to steal the game.
The explanation centered on usage and protection. "Well, we're just in our two-minute situation right there, so in our pass emphasis, it's obviously Tyler (Allgeier) being kind of that 'third-down back,' if you will.
So they're heating us up pretty good. From that standpoint, it's more his role.
Jeremiyah can obviously be out there and do it, but you want to segment, I guess you could say, a little bit. It wasn't like we were going to be using our back in the pass game, if you will.
So it's more of a protection emphasis."
Arizona’s first snap of the drive was a play-action throw that fell incomplete to Michael Wilson. On the next play, the Cardinals had a run called, but it was checked to a pass and again went incomplete to Wilson.
"Yeah, the second-down one was a run play. We just had a run alert with it because they went all out. So we could have ran it, but literally they would have gone all out, so it would have been a situation where you'd be praying that it worked, not just running it to run it," LaFleur said.
"That was the thought process on the second down. Again, you thought they probably would all out it, so we had the kind of the out route to Mike (wide receiver Michael Wilson) there that we feel good about."
A third-down incompletion to Trey McBride came next, and Brissett’s third interception of the day followed, with the Giants returning it for a touchdown as time expired.
The red-zone issues have been hanging around Arizona since the start of the season, with the offense settling for field goals more often than it wants. Love’s value in the passing game was seen by many as a possible answer on that final drive, especially with the Giants bringing pressure the way they did. He’s viewed as a better route-runner than Allgeier and someone who could have created easier separation.
There was also concern about Love’s health. He was seen having his ankle worked on during the game, and that stood out because he missed several weeks of the preseason with a high ankle sprain and had gone down during the open portion of practice last week.
"I’ll have to see. I haven't talked to him yet in terms of that, but I know that they just kept saying he'll be up. So, we'll look at it a little bit more tomorrow, obviously," LaFleur said.

Marvin Harrison Jr. Trade Talk Is Putting Cardinals Fans On Edge
Rumors around Marvin Harrison Jr. have quickly become the kind that can rattle a fan base, especially when a player with his profile is involved. For Cardinals supporters, the noise is coming from outside the building, with Indianapolis reportedly showing interest and a wider list of suitors also said to be monitoring the situation, including the Chiefs, Raiders, Bills, Giants and Texans.
The Colts interest carries extra intrigue because their ability to put together a deal is constrained by limited draft capital after past trades, which makes any real movement harder to engineer. Even so, the fact that Harrisons name is circulating at all is enough to keep Arizona followers on edge, and it leaves one of the leagues most closely watched wideout stories hanging in a tense spot. Cardinals Catch Lions Defense At A Tense Time
A rough afternoon in Carolina only added to the scrutiny around the Lions, and head coach Dan Campbell wasted little time addressing where things stand on defense. He confirmed that Kelvin Sheppard will stay on as defensive coordinator, while also making clear the unit is still a work in progress and that the staff is looking for ways to give other players a chance to help improve the performance.
For the Cardinals, that makes this a familiar kind of opponent-facing wrinkle to monitor, especially when a contender is trying to steady itself without overreacting to one bad result. Campbells message was less about a quick fix than a broader standard, with mediocrity off the table and improvement needed across every phase, which leaves Detroit carrying both the urgency and the uncertainty into the next stretch. Jeremiyah Love's Hot Start Comes With One Big Cardinals Question
Dane Brugler of The Athletic put together an early 2026 NFL All-Rookie Team after the first four games of the season, and it was enough to get Arizona rookie running back Jeremiyah Love some well-earned attention. Love was listed as the starting running back on the team, a nod to the way he has opened his pro career by leading all rookies in rushing yards and receptions out of the backfield.
For the Cardinals, the praise is encouraging but still comes with a reminder of how quickly these early-season judgments can shift. Bruglers list is built on a small sample, and Loves start has certainly been loud, but the bigger question is how long he can keep this pace going once defenses adjust and the season settles into its grind.
