Sean McVay and Mike LaFleur will share the same sideline history when the Arizona Cardinals meet the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday in Week 6, but neither coach is turning this into a personal showcase.
LaFleur, now the Cardinals’ head coach, spent time on McVay’s staff as offensive coordinator before landing his current job. This will be his first chance to go against his former boss, yet both coaches have made it clear they’re keeping the focus on the game itself.
McVay said Thursday that the relationship is still there, even if the week has been too busy for a longer conversation so far.
“Mike and I talk a lot," said McVay. "I haven't talked to him yet this week just because it's been busier than normal, but I will talk to him at some point.
I love Mike, and it's about the Rams versus the Cardinals. We're going to try to get after him as good as we can this week, but there's a lot of good tape.
He's done a great job there. We miss him a lot here, but we're happy for Mike.”
LaFleur, asked Wednesday about coming back to SoFi, gave a similarly low-key answer.
“Just based off this last Sunday, outside of just seeing their jerseys and knowing who this team is, as much as I love Sean, I haven’t really thought of him too much," he said. "I’m sure he’s kind of feeling the same way about me right now.”
The Rams have had the upper hand in this matchup for years, going 16-3 against the Cardinals since 2017, with one of those wins coming in the playoffs.
So while this is a reunion on paper, the real test is whether LaFleur can be the one to finally get the better of McVay. It will also be his first matchup against McVay outside of working as a position coach.

Cardinals Fans Have Every Reason To Debate This NFL Punishment
The NFL added another point of frustration for a Cardinals team trying to find its footing, fining tight end Elijah Higgins for unnecessary use of the helmet on a play last week. It was a hefty penalty, and one that stood out in a week when the league handed out 23 fines across the NFL. Higgins has been a modest but useful part of Arizonas passing game through the first five weeks, with eight catches for 96 yards and a touchdown.
For Cardinals fans, the debate is less about the dollars and more about where the line gets drawn on contact in a physical league. Higgins fine ranked among the largest in that weeks batch of punishments, which only makes the scrutiny sharper for a player who is still carving out his role in the offense. It leaves Arizona with yet another reminder that even routine-looking plays can carry real consequences long after the whistle blows. [Read more 🡒]
Cardinals Face A Bigger Week 6 Problem Than Just The Rams
The Cardinals have spent the build-up to Week 6 shuffling their roster and trying to keep enough bodies available for a trip to SoFi Stadium, where theyll face the Rams while carrying a four-game losing streak. Several players have already been ruled out or listed as questionable, and the uncertainty has added another layer to a week that already feels pivotal for Arizona as it tries to steady itself and get back on track.
Mike LaFleur said the team is handling those calls on a game-by-game basis, with the focus squarely on putting the best possible group on the field Sunday rather than reacting with sweeping changes. Budda Baker remains one of the more notable names in that mix, while Zaven Collins and Blake Gillikin also did not get the kind of weekend bump the Cardinals were hoping for, leaving Arizona with a few lingering questions as kickoff approaches. Cardinals Face A Familiar Rams Problem They Still Havent Solved
The Rams have been a recurring problem for Arizona ever since Sean McVay took over in 2017, and the numbers have only reinforced the point. Los Angeles has controlled the matchup in a way few division opponents can, and even with a new look in Arizona, the Cardinals are still walking into a familiar test at SoFi Stadium.
Jacoby Brissett is still searching for his first win over the Rams, and the Cardinals know the margin for error is thin whenever these teams meet. Mike LaFleur is about to face Los Angeles for the first time as a head coach, which adds another layer to a matchup Arizona has not solved, even as the rivalry keeps coming back around.
