The Cardinals are heading into Week 1 with one of their starting spots still in limbo, and right guard is the one to watch. Isaiah Adams is locked in as the starter there, but a knee injury he picked up sometime before Arizona’s preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 22 has put his status for the Sept. 13 opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in doubt.
Head coach Mike LaFleur said Adams is “doing well,” and added that the question of whether he can suit up “would go right into Week 1.” That’s about as clear as things are right now, which is to say not very clear at all.
Adams was hurt badly enough that he didn’t even travel to Green Bay. In the latest open practice session, he wasn’t out there either. Since the Cardinals don’t have an official injury report until next Wednesday, there’s still no firm read on how much he’s doing behind the scenes.
For now, Jon Gaines is the man at right guard while Adams works his way back. The depth behind him is thin.
Hayden Conner is the only healthy backup guard and center available, and he comes in with five career NFL games and 29 total snaps. Rookie Chase Bisontis, who had been expected to push for the starting job after being taken in the second round, is done for the year after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the preseason.
That makes Adams’ practice work next week a major checkpoint for Arizona.

Steelers Cut Just Drew Immediate Interest From Another Team
The Cardinals added some familiar depth to the secondary, signing cornerback D'Shawn Jamison to the practice squad after he worked out for the team. Jamison had just been waived by the Steelers during final roster cuts and arrives with experience from both Pittsburgh and Carolina, where his value has largely come on special teams.
Arizonas cornerback room has been stretched a bit, with five players on the active roster and one starter currently injured. That made the workout worth watching, and Jamisons quick landing spot suggests the Cardinals were looking for someone who could help right away while adding another layer of insurance to a thin position group. Cardinals Opener Picture Is Shifting As Key Roster Decisions Take Shape
The Cardinals opener picture is starting to come into focus as Mike LaFleur sorted through a few of the roster issues hanging over camp. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is making steady progress from a high-ankle sprain, and the team is still sorting out Garrett Williams status before the season opener, two developments that keep the secondary and backfield in the spotlight as the start of the year approaches.
LaFleur also said James Conner was moved to injured reserve to give him more time to recover, a decision that underscores how carefully the Cardinals are managing the early part of the season. Across the league, Lions GM Brad Holmes offered a similar update on Isiah Pacheco, saying the back injury has been improving without attaching a timetable, a reminder that a lot of teams are heading toward opening day with key pieces still in flux. Cardinals Fans Will Love The Hype Around This Rookie Back But Theres A Catch
The buzz around the next Offensive Rookie of the Year race is already starting to build, and for Cardinals fans, the rookie back to keep an eye on is part of a bigger conversation about which young playmakers are set up to make an immediate splash. Jeremiyah Love has emerged as the betting favorite heading into the 2026 NFL season, and the hype is easy to understand given the kind of impact a dynamic rookie runner can have right away when the situation is right.
But theres a familiar catch with the favorite: talent alone does not always carry a rookie award chase, and concerns about his teams overall performance and offensive line are already part of the discussion. Jadarian Price is drawing attention as a more appealing value play because of a friendlier team setup, which is exactly the kind of context Cardinals fans should appreciate when weighing how much preseason buzz really translates once the games begin.
