Cardinals Defense Reaches Breaking Point Before Rams Showdown

With the Cardinals' defensive struggles under scrutiny, DC Nick Rallis commits to pivotal adjustments ahead of the crucial matchup against the Rams in Week 6.

Nick Rallis is facing the kind of defensive numbers that leave very little room for spin, and ahead of Week 6 he didn’t try to dress them up.

With the Cardinals sitting at 1-4 and headed into Sunday’s divisional matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the defensive coordinator acknowledged that what he and the staff have asked the unit to do simply isn’t translating on game day. Arizona brought him back for continuity on that side of the ball, but through five games of the 2026 season, that choice has become hard to defend.

“Our coaches are phenomenal, and I think the players pour in every week and practice really well, but there are things I got to look at and say ‘how do I get them to find success on Sunday?'” he said ahead of Sunday's divisional matchup versus the Los Angeles Rams, per reporter Bo Brack.

“Even if it makes sense to me, it ain't working right now. So what it is that change-up going to be that maybe triggers something a little bit different and allows them to just go out and play the opponent?”

That admission lands against a brutal statistical backdrop. Arizona is allowing an NFL-worst 32.4 points per week and ranks 26th in total defense at 363.4 yards allowed per game.

The problems haven’t been isolated, either. The Cardinals have already given up 18 completions of at least 20 yards and 14 receiving touchdowns, per NFL.com.

Those numbers tell the story of a defense that keeps leaking explosive plays and hasn’t found a reliable answer. Rallis said the staff may need to find a different trigger, but the reality is that this group has yet to show it can consistently stop the bleeding.

That leaves the burden squarely on the defensive coordinator to get this unit back into respectable shape, and the timing couldn’t be tougher with an angry Rams team coming to town. For Arizona, the hope now is less about perfection and more about seeing some kind of progress before the season slips further away.

C.J. Stroud Is Already Sending A Clear Message About Marvin Harrison Jr

Marvin Harrison Jr. is heading to Houston, where the Texans will get a rare opportunity to reunite a quarterback and receiver who already know how each other thinks. C.J. Stroud is clearly energized by the move, and his reaction has offered an immediate glimpse into how Houston plans to use the former Cardinals wideout. Beyond the obvious chemistry angle, there is a familiarity here that should matter as the Texans sort through what Harrison can become in a new setting.

Strouds support also carries weight because it comes with specifics, not just the usual welcome-to-the-team optimism. He pointed to Harrisons maturity, work ethic and route running as traits that should translate well in Houston, while also making it clear he has no concerns about Harrisons ability to handle the spotlight. For Arizona, it is another reminder of what the Cardinals are giving up, and for the Texans it adds to the expectation that Harrison could quickly become a central part of what they are building. Texans Just Benefited From A Cardinals Decision That Stung Arizona

Michael Wilsons rise put the Cardinals in a position they didnt reach often last season, and Arizona made a major commitment to him with a three-year, $75 million extension after his breakout. The move signaled that the Cardinals were ready to reshape the offense around Wilsons role, even as the wider receiver room continued to shift around him.

Marvin Harrison Jr.s departure to Houston only sharpened that change, sending another high-profile piece out of Arizona in exchange for draft capital and leaving the Cardinals to recalibrate again. Wilson did not hide how much the move affected him, speaking warmly about Harrisons work ethic and character while making clear the transition was a difficult one for the locker room. [Read more 🡒]

Cardinals Hit Another Brutal Low As QB Frustration Builds

Arizonas rough start has only gotten harder to ignore as the NFC picture sorts itself out around them. While two of the leagues three remaining unbeaten teams sit in the conference and every 4-1 club belongs to the AFC, the Cardinals have been stuck on the wrong side of the conversation, lumped in with a Washington team that has also badly underachieved and is now feeling the heat from every angle.

The frustration in Arizona goes beyond the standings and into the weekly question of whether a change under center is coming soon. Jacoby Brissett has not steadied the offense, and the possibility of giving rookie Carson Beck a look only adds to the sense that the Cardinals are nearing a pivot point, with bigger organizational fallout not out of the question if the slide continues.
