Cardinals Could Turn Jacoby Brissett's Demotion Into A Strange Deadline Move

Could Jacoby Brissett be the key to solving the Vikings' offensive struggles, despite the Cardinals' amusing trade opportunity?

The Arizona Cardinals may be heading toward one of the strangest trade ideas on the board before the NFL’s Nov. 10 deadline, and it involves a quarterback who once held their starting job.

Jacoby Brissett is no longer Arizona’s starter after head coach Mike LaFleur officially turned the offense over to Gardner Minshew, with Carson Beck now listed behind him as QB2. That leaves Brissett in the emergency role, and with the deadline a week away, he looks like a player the Cardinals could move.

Minnesota has emerged as a possible landing spot. Even with a 6-1 record, the Vikings have not gotten much going offensively with Kyler Murray at quarterback, and with J.J. McCarthy out of the picture, they could look outside the building for help.

Brissett would fit the profile of a low-cost veteran option. He’s on an expiring contract, and a deal would likely require only a modest draft pick to get done.

Vikings On SI’s Trevor Ripley pointed to Brissett as a real possibility, writing:

"After an impressive 2025 season with 23 touchdowns to just eight picks, Brissett hasn’t looked as sharp in 2026, with seven interceptions already. If the Cards do opt to roll with Minshew moving forward, Brissett could likely be had for a late Day 3 pick," he wrote.

"Brissett may not move the needle enough for the Vikings, although he does have four games this year with at least 270 passing yards. Head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system clearly isn’t super adaptable either, so even though getting a capable passer for a relatively low price could be interesting, learning this offense to a point of making a difference feels like a steep mountain to climb."

Brissett originally came to Arizona as Murray’s backup before the 2025 season. Murray was injured in Week 5 and never returned, and Brissett played well enough the rest of the way to keep Arizona committed to him entering 2026.

After the season, the Cardinals cut Murray and took on a major cap hit, which opened the door for Murray to join Minnesota on a cheap one-year deal.

The Vikings’ offense has been struggling by the numbers, sitting near the bottom of the league in total yards per game at 279.4, which ranks 29th, and points per game at 20.0, which ranks 27th. Murray’s QBR of 44.7 ranks 26th among NFL quarterbacks.

It would be a bizarre twist if Brissett ended up in Minnesota, but the league has seen stranger things.

Cardinals Defense Carried Arizona In OT And A Few Names Stand Out

Arizonas 33-30 overtime win over Dallas had plenty of offense attached to it, but the defensive side of the ledger deserves its own look. Twenty players saw snaps on defense, and the Cardinals leaned on a broad group to survive a game that kept swinging back and forth. The snap counts tell part of the story, but the bigger takeaway was how many different defenders had a hand in keeping the Cowboys from finishing the job.

Among the names that stood out were L.J. Collier, Dante Stills, Mack Wilson Sr., Josh Sweat, Budda Baker and Andrew Wingard, with each showing up in the box score in some way through tackles, pressure or pass defense. Colliers night was especially eventful, and Sweat was right in the middle of the late-game push when Arizona needed one more stop to stay alive. For a defense that was on the field so often, the mix of production and resilience was enough to tilt overtime in the Cardinals favor. [Read more 🡒]

Cardinals Backfield Suddenly Looks Like A Survival Test

Arizona entered training camp feeling good about its running back depth, but the picture has thinned fast, leaving the backfield looking far more fragile than anyone expected. Tyler Allgeier was the lone healthy runner available in the recent game against the Dallas Cowboys, and he made the most of the opportunity with a strong showing while the rest of the room dealt with injuries.

The Cardinals now have to piece together the position for the weeks ahead, with Evan Hull suddenly in line for a much larger role if the roster stays as is. The team is also weighing whether to move one of its young backs to injured reserve so he can fully recover, a decision that would clarify the depth chart but also underline just how quickly a promising group turned into a survival test. Cardinals Still Have A Real Opening In The NFC Race

After eight weeks, the NFC picture still has enough clutter to keep Arizona in the conversation. The Cardinals sit at 3-5, but the conference standings remain tight enough that a handful of teams are still bunched around the cut line, with the current playoff field and the next group of challengers all trying to separate themselves in November.

Arizonas path is still narrow, but it is there, and the next round of NFC games should help clarify who is really in position to make a run. For a team trying to climb back into the mix, the margin for error is already thin, and every result around the conference matters as much as what the Cardinals do themselves. [Read more 🡒]
