The Cardinals have moved to add some insurance at cornerback, with former Steelers defensive back D’Shawn Jamison headed to Arizona’s practice squad after Pittsburgh let him go in final cuts.
A source told CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz on Wednesday that the Cardinals were signing Jamison, and Arizona Cardinals On SI reported he had already worked out for the team. Pittsburgh waived the 27-year-old on Aug. 30 when it trimmed to 53 players, and he didn’t land on the Steelers’ practice squad. Two days later, Arizona was the next stop.
The move has not shown up on Arizona’s official transactions page as of Thursday morning, so it remains a reported signing until the team or league office lists it. NFL Trade Rumors also circulated the Zenitz report Wednesday night.
Arizona’s need at the position is pretty clear. The Cardinals kept only five corners on the initial 53-man roster - Will Johnson, Garrett Williams, Max Melton, Denzel Burke and Kei’Trel Clark, according to The Arizona Republic - and that’s not much cushion for a group that can get thin fast in September.
Johnson is also dealing with a lower-body injury. Head coach Mike LaFleur used that wording with reporters this week, per RotoWire, and said the second-year starter is “progressing well.”
There’s no timetable yet, and Arizona opens at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 13.
Jamison doesn’t arrive as a likely Week 1 starter. He’s the kind of practice-squad addition teams make when they want speed, special teams help and a familiar body in the building. He can cover kicks, return one if needed and give the coaches a look they already know.
That familiarity matters here. Senior defensive assistant Teryl Austin spent 2019-25 in Pittsburgh, including the last four seasons as defensive coordinator, before Arizona hired him in March, the Cardinals’ official site documented. Cardinals On SI noted that shared background likely helped Jamison’s workout turn into a contract.
The profile is pretty straightforward. Jamison is 5-foot-9 and 186 pounds, which has pushed his NFL work toward the slot and special teams rather than outside corner. He can run, he can track the ball on coverage units, and that’s the kind of utility a practice squad can use right before kickoff.
His path has already taken a few turns. Carolina claimed him off waivers from San Francisco in 2023 after he signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Texas.
He played 15 games that season, made one start, and finished with 10 tackles and a pass breakup, per ESPN. Pro Football Archives listed 107 defensive snaps and 155 special-teams snaps, and he also returned two kickoffs for 40 yards.
The Panthers cut him in August 2024, and Pittsburgh signed him to its practice squad on Sept. 17, 2024.
The Steelers kept bringing him back on reserve/future deals, and in 2025 he was elevated for regular-season games against Cincinnati, Cleveland and Baltimore, along with the Wild Card loss to Houston, ESPN’s game log shows. He did not record a regular-season tackle, though he did return one kickoff for 20 yards.
His preseason work in Pittsburgh was stronger than the regular-season stat line. Across three August games, Jamison posted eight tackles and a forced fumble, according to NFL.com and The Football Database.
Steelers Now also credited him with a quarterback hit. Even so, it wasn’t enough to survive the final roster cut.
At Texas, Jamison spent five seasons as both a corner and returner. When he signed with San Francisco in 2023, the school said he had 54 kickoff returns for 1,435 yards and two touchdowns, plus 44 punt returns for 368 yards and one score. Sports-Reference lists him with 139 career tackles, six interceptions, 17 passes defended, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one sack.
That return experience is part of what makes him useful to Arizona right now. With only five corners on the roster and Johnson working through injury, the Cardinals are giving themselves another option before Week 1.
If Johnson is fine and the rest of the group stays upright, Jamison can settle in as scout-team depth and coverage help in Tempe. If the room takes another hit before Sept. 13, Arizona already knows exactly where to find him.
