The Arizona Cardinals are into training camp, and one of the first real battles worth watching sits on the right side of the offensive line.
The team reported Wednesday, hit the field for its first practice Thursday, and fans will get their first look at camp on Friday. Among the most important competitions on the roster is the fight for the starting right guard job.
Right now, that battle appears to be between Isaiah Adams and Chase Bisontis.
Adams is entering his third season and has already had a few runs at the spot. As a rookie, he started five games. He opened last season as the starter, lost the job to Will Hernandez, and then stepped back in after Hernandez was injured to finish the year in the lineup.
He also spent the entire spring working with the first-team offense during the offseason program.
Bisontis, though, brings the kind of draft status that usually makes a team lean in one direction. The Cardinals took him in the second round this year with the 34th overall pick, a slot that points to him being the player the organization would prefer to see win the job. He was also projected by some to go as high as the first round.
That’s why most around the situation expect Bisontis to end up with the starting role. Still, Adams has a real case. He looked much better down the stretch last season, and the question now is whether that strong finish is enough to keep Bisontis from taking over.
