GLENDALE - The Arizona Cardinals have already named Jacoby Brissett their starting quarterback for 2026, but that hasn’t stopped the team from making a clear investment in Carson Beck’s growth.
Head coach Mike LaFleur said Friday that the Cardinals are taking an unusual approach with the rookie third-round pick, who is currently listed as the third-string quarterback. Instead of giving all of the scout-team work to one backup, the Cardinals are splitting those reps between Beck and Gardner Minshew.
ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss laid out the distribution on his X account, noting that the two quarterbacks will split 32 reps on Wednesday, 36 on Thursday and 20 on Friday.
LaFleur explained the reasoning this way:
“As you’re trying to develop these guys, we just thought it was right to do that. If had Gardner been a second-year guy and was our No. 2, then probably wouldn’t be doing this. But because he has played so much football, so much meaningful football in this league, understands this system, obviously took all the reps through OTAs, took a ton of reps in training camp, that’s why we felt comfortable being able to do this.”
Beck flashed real promise in his only preseason appearance, completing 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. But the momentum from that outing was cut short by a rib injury in the game, and he sat out the rest of the preseason.
With Beck stuck as the third-stringer and his reps naturally limited, LaFleur appears intent on keeping the 23-year-old engaged and confident. Minshew’s experience, along with the work he already got in OTAs and training camp, gives the Cardinals the flexibility to keep Beck involved now and keep his development moving.
