Travis Vokolek’s NFL career is over before the Cardinals even got fully into training camp.
The Arizona tight end and special-teamer announced on his personal Instagram and X that he is medically retiring after the neck injury he suffered in the Cardinals’ Week 6 game against the Indianapolis Colts. Vokolek is 28, and he said the decision came after recommendations from multiple doctors and neurologists.
“I am forever grateful to all my teammates, coaches, trainers, and others who have supported my family and I along the way,” Vokolek wrote.
“A sincere thank you to the Arizona Cardinals training staff for being first class with the care and support they provided my family and I with during this hard time.”
The injury came during a kickoff sequence that was supposed to be safer under the NFL’s revamped format. Even with the league’s 2024 switch to the UFL’s “dynamic kickoff” in place to cut down on injuries from the old setup, Vokolek was hurt after slipping on the turf in a short tussle with another Indianapolis special-teamer before Colts kicker Michael Bagley’s kickoff was ruled dead for a touchback.
Vokolek was cleared to leave the hospital before the Cardinals departed Indianapolis, and he flew back to Arizona with the team.
Support poured in on his Instagram post from Cardinals kicker Chad Ryland, tight end Elijah Higgins, and former Baltimore Ravens teammates Patrick Queen and Roquan Smith.
A former Rutgers and Nebraska tight end, Vokolek entered the league with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and later joined Arizona off the Ravens’ practice squad. He finishes his pro career with one start and eight games played, mostly on special teams.
“I have attacked everyday of being a professional football player with passion, determination, and discipline,” Vokolek continued. “I can say that I truly left everything out on the field.
Thank you for all of the love and support. Lastly, thank you football!”
His retirement leaves Arizona looking ahead with Trey McBride, Higgins, Tip Reiman and Teagan Quitoriano in the tight end mix. Vokolek had been expected to help fill Reiman’s role as an in-line blocker before the injury changed everything.

Cardinals Camp Is Already Raising Questions Fans Cannot Ignore
The Cardinals opened training camp to fans at no charge and spent the day working through the kind of offensive and defensive drills that can reveal a lot before the pads really start to come on. Gardner Minshew and Carson Beck took first-team reps at quarterback, giving the early competition a little more shape, while the defensive backs and safeties stayed busy on the other side of the ball with Budda Baker right in the middle of it.
Beck, in particular, drew attention for looking comfortable and showing the kind of arm talent that can make a camp practice feel more meaningful than it ought to be this early. On defense, Bakers presence stood out as much for the way he helped younger backs as for the work he did himself, and rookie Isaiah Adams also took part in drills as the Cardinals kept the focus on football and let the camp questions linger for another day. Cardinals Add Another Defensive Tackle As Camp Battle Gets Tighter
The Cardinals kept their defensive line group moving this week, signing Coziah Izzard after a tryout to add another body to a crowded training camp competition.
