San Diego Gulls Stun Eagles in Epic Shootout Comeback Victory

Gulls soar to a thrilling shootout victory over the Eagles, showcasing resilience and skill in a dramatic comeback at Blue Arena.

The San Diego Gulls pulled off a thrilling comeback against the Colorado Eagles, clinching their second straight win with a 6-5 shootout victory at Blue Arena. This game was a rollercoaster of action, particularly in the second period, where six goals were scored in a flurry of just over five minutes. Down by two late in the third, the Gulls clawed their way back to force overtime, eventually sealing the win in a four-man shootout thanks to Nikita Nesterenko's decisive strike.

Sasha Pastujov was the hero in regulation, tying the game with just 33 seconds left. With 44 points this season, Pastujov leads the Gulls in scoring, and his clutch goal was assisted by Sam Colangelo and Tristan Luneau. Colangelo had a standout night with three points, while Luneau added his second point after scoring a crucial goal less than a minute earlier.

Reflecting on the team's resilience, Colangelo remarked, "We've shown this year that we're never out of a game. Our six-on-five units have been strong, building chemistry game by game. Hopefully, we won't need too many more comebacks, but the Gulls are tough to beat."

In goal, Tomas Suchanek was instrumental, stopping 24 of 29 shots and making critical saves in the shootout to keep the Gulls in contention.

The second period was a goal fest, kicked off by Nathan Gaucher's shorthanded effort, his ninth of the season. Gaucher has a knack for scoring against Colorado, with both of his shorthanded goals coming at Blue Arena. The Gulls now lead the Pacific Division and are tied for second in the AHL with 10 shorthanded goals this season.

Sam Colangelo added to the excitement with a powerful slap shot, assisted by a slick sequence from Cal Burke and Matthew Phillips. Phillips, who ended a 13-game goal drought, also scored his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Pastujov and Ryan Carpenter, solidifying their status as the team's top point-getters.

The Gulls and Eagles are set to face off again tomorrow night at Blue Arena. Head coach Matt McIlvane emphasized the importance of focusing on their own game, acknowledging the challenge ahead against a determined Colorado squad.

"We're getting ready for a man's game tomorrow," McIlvane said. "There's room for growth, and we're ready to find it."
