Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Easton Cowan made quite the impression Thursday night, dropping the gloves in his first NHL fight during a spirited 6-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Scotiabank Arena.
The skirmish erupted in the third period when Ducks defenseman Jackson LaCombe delivered a bone-crunching hit on Leafs forward Nick Robertson. Cowan, not one to back down, stepped up to defend his teammate, squaring off with LaCombe.
Cowan's actions earned him a two-minute penalty for instigating, a five-minute major for fighting, and a 10-minute misconduct. LaCombe also received a five-minute major for the bout.
This victory was a breath of fresh air for the Leafs, snapping an eight-game losing streak in style.
The game kicked off with Matias Maccelli lighting the lamp for the Leafs, giving them an early 1-0 lead at 7:19 of the first period. Anaheim's Cutter Gauthier quickly responded, leveling the score at 1-1. Ian Moore's goal then pushed the Ducks ahead 2-1.
The second period saw the Ducks extend their lead to 3-1 with a goal from Pavel Mintyukov at 2:55. But the Leafs weren't about to roll over. Power-play goals from stars Auston Matthews and John Tavares brought the game back to a 3-3 stalemate.
Matthew Knies shared his thoughts on the team's resilience: “I love that we stayed composed and didn’t really get away from the game and found a way to win. You know the player (Gudas), he’s done that quite often. … That’s our best player going down."
In the final period, William Nylander put the Leafs ahead 4-3 with another power-play goal. Bo Grouix then made it 5-3, followed by Matthew Knies sealing the deal with an empty-netter at 18:12. Alex Killorn added a late goal for the Ducks, finalizing the score at 6-4.
This game was more than just a win; it was a statement of determination and grit from the Leafs, with Easton Cowan’s debut fight epitomizing the team’s fighting spirit.
