Ducks Nearly Faced A Brutal Pavel Mintyukov Contract Drama

In a swift move to retain rising star Pavel Mintyukov, the Anaheim Ducks secured a lucrative contract after multiple teams circled with interest, underscoring Mintyukov's growing value in the NHL.

Anaheim came within reach of a real offseason headache with Pavel Mintyukov.

The Ducks defenceman drew enough attention this summer that at least one club was prepared to take the offer-sheet route, according to his agent Dan Milstein. That was exactly the kind of scenario Anaheim wanted to dodge after already dealing with Leo Carlsson agreeing to an offer sheet with Philadelphia a few days earlier.

Mintyukov eventually stayed put, signing a five-year, $36 million contract with the Ducks. He turns 23 on Nov. 25.

Milstein said the interest around Mintyukov was real, and that the defender’s preference was to remain in Anaheim. In an exclusive interview Wednesday on DFO Insider with Jeff Marek and TFP’s David Pagnotta, Milstein confirmed how close things came to landing elsewhere.

“Yes. We had a couple of good things going, but the priority was obviously to stay in Anaheim, and to be fully transparent, we really didn’t have any good conversations or any contract conversations with Anaheim leading into the offer sheet conversation,” Milstein explained.

“And so when we were close, Pavel wanted to stay with Anaheim, I just called (Ducks GM Pat Verbeek) and said, 'hey, Pat, I’m going to have something coming in here shortly. And, can we talk about a contract?’

And so we basically got together, we got the deal done in a matter of two days, and, basically that’s what happened.”

Drafted 10th overall by the Ducks in the 2022 NHL Draft, Mintyukov has started this season with two goals and four assists for six points in 12 games.

Ducks At Center Of Heated McDavid Incident Fans Will Debate

Connor McDavid left another high-profile game with plenty to say after a collision near the Anaheim net turned into one of the nights most talked-about moments. The Oilers star said he considered the play dangerous, and the sequence quickly spiraled into a bigger issue when Edmontons Vasily Podkolzin answered with a fight and took the only five-minute major on the play.

Even with the frustration hanging over the finish, McDavid still managed to shape the game in his usual way. He logged 24:25, scored a goal and added three assists in Edmontons 5-4 loss, extending his point streak to 17 games, but the call and the reaction around it are the kind of details that will keep this one under a microscope long after the final horn. Ducks Young Core Just Delivered A Road Win Fans Will Notice

The Ducks left Edmonton with a 5-4 road win that had plenty for their fans to chew on, and it came with a strong showing from two of the organizations younger pieces. Pavel Mintyukov and Beckett Sennecke each played a central role in the attack, while Laurent Brossoit backed it up with 23 saves as Anaheim found a way to keep pace in a game that had the feel of a showcase for the next wave.

Connor McDavid still did Connor McDavid things, scoring once and adding three assists to stretch his points streak to 17 games this season, but Anaheim did enough to survive the push. The Oilers were also forced to turn to Matt Tomkins in goal, and with the Ducks taking advantage of the situation, this was the kind of result that can linger for a young team trying to build some credibility on the road. Ducks Fans Had Every Reason To Debate This First-Period Fight Call

The first-period scrap between Vasily Podkolzin and Drew Helleson gave Ducks fans plenty to chew on in real time, and not just because it was the kind of early-game dustup that can set a tone. Podkolzin went after Helleson in an NHL game between Edmonton and Anaheim, and the officials sorted through a call that immediately had both benches and the crowd taking notice.

For Anaheim, the debate centered on how the penalties were handed out after the fight, especially with Helleson involved in his first NHL bout. Podkolzin was hit with an instigator minor, a fighting major and a game misconduct, while Helleson came away with only a roughing minor, leaving the Ducks with a result that felt as notable as the fight itself.
