Ducks Injury Crunch Could Force A Surprise Up Front

Amid key injuries, the Anaheim Ducks turn to promising rookie Roger McQueen for a potential NHL debut as they adjust their roster strategy.

The Anaheim Ducks are set to bring up forward Roger McQueen from AHL San Diego, according to Elliotte Friedman.

McQueen, 20, is in the first year of a three-year entry-level contract he signed in April after his freshman season at Providence College. He finished that college year with 27 points in 36 NCAA games.

On his amateur tryout agreement, which pushed the ELC to this being his first, he added three points in seven games to wrap up 2025-26. His cap hit is $1.075MM, and with Anaheim having sent down defenseman Travis Mitchell earlier, the move balances out financially and leaves the Ducks holding their current cap space with injured players at around $3.2MM.

A 6-foot-6 Saskatoon native, McQueen is known for an offensive game built on elusiveness and slick passing that opens looks for his teammates. He can also bring a physical edge when the points don’t show up. Even with the injury from his draft year in Brandon, Anaheim still took him 10th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft.

If he gets into the lineup tonight against the Calgary Flames, with puck drop set for 9:45 p.m. EST, it would be his NHL debut.

The recall comes after the Ducks were hit with injuries to forwards Cutter Gauthier and Ryan Poehling. Anaheim lists both as day-to-day, with more clarity expected soon. The Ducks finished the final 14:00 of their game in Calgary with 11 forwards.

Gauthier and Poehling were regulars last season, appearing in 75 and 76 games, respectively. Gauthier’s 40-goal finish on the wing is the obvious headline, while Poehling has been a dependable third-line center who helps on the penalty kill and can chip in short-handed offense with his speed.

With Troy Terry already on long-term injured reserve, the Ducks need more younger players on two-way deals to step in. Given the roster upheaval they dealt with over the offseason, this could end up serving as a useful jolt of youth in Orange County. If McQueen’s game translates right away, it gives Anaheim another dynamic piece as it tries to stay in the playoff chase.

Anaheim is third in the Pacific Division with four wins and eight points. Its only loss has come against Edmonton, which sits one place ahead of the Ducks in the wild card standings.

Ducks Still Havent Solved The Problem Fans Thought Was Behind Them

The Ducks were back at Honda Center trying to turn the page after a frustrating start, and for a while the night had the feel of a chance to steady things. Beckett Sennecke and Leo Carlsson gave Anaheim offense, Luk Dostl kept them in it with 32 saves, and the crowd also got its first look at Roger McQueen in an NHL debut that added a little extra intrigue to an already important home date.

Instead, the game slipped away in familiar fashion. Calgary, winless coming in, broke through for its first victory of the season behind goals from Adam Klapka, Aydar Suniev, Martin Pospisil and Yegor Sharangovich, while Dustin Wolf turned aside 23 shots at the other end. For Anaheim, the larger concern is how quickly the night exposed the same issue fans hoped was finally behind them, especially with Cutter Gauthier and Ryan Poehling out injured. [Read more 🡒]

Ducks Just Saw Why Calgarys New Call-Up Matters Fast

Aydar Suniev has made a fast impression since getting the call from Calgary on Oct. 7, and the Ducks got a firsthand look at why the Flames are giving him an immediate runway. Through three games, the young winger has slotted mostly on the second line with Morgan Frost and Matt Coronato, and he has already shown the kind of scoring touch that can matter quickly for a team looking to find its footing early in the season.

His production has climbed with each outing, capped by a stronger showing against Anaheim in Calgarys first win of the season. Suniev was active from different offensive areas and looked increasingly comfortable in a role that asks him to keep pace with proven NHL talent, a promising sign for the Flames and a reminder for the Ducks that this is the kind of call-up who can change a game sooner than expected. Gulls Get An Early Rivalry Test Ducks Fans Will Recognize

The San Diego Gulls are getting an early test in a rivalry that Ducks fans know well, with Ontario coming to Pechanga Arena San Diego tonight to open the season series. The two clubs have spent plenty of time circling each other in the Pacific Division, and the matchup already carries the kind of edge that tends to show up when nearby teams are separated by little more than familiarity and pride.

For the Gulls, it is also a useful measuring stick, since Dave Manson and Nico Myatovic have both pointed to the value of seeing where the group stands in a game like this. There is the usual rivalry heat attached to it, but there is also the more practical question of readiness, and this one should start offering a clearer answer once the Reign settle into their first real lineup look of the season.
