Ducks Fans Finally Get Their First Real Look At San Diego's New Era

Anticipation builds as the San Diego Gulls aim to start their home campaign on a high note against the Henderson Silver Knights following a mixed start on the road.

Hockey is back in San Diego, and the Gulls get to celebrate it the right way: at home, in front of their own crowd, against a familiar opponent.

San Diego hosts the Henderson Silver Knights tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego for its home opener, with puck drop set for 6 p.m. PDT. The Gulls arrive back in town after opening the 2026-27 season with three road games and a 1-1-1-0 record, and this will be their first time back on home ice since April 18.

"It's going to be fun," Roman Kinal said. "It's always exciting here, everyone's excited to get hockey back in San Diego, and it'll be a lot of fun for us and the fans.

It's going to be a good battle versus Henderson too. So, we're excited for that."

The night is built to feel like a true opening-day event. Fans can start with an Orange Carpet Event at 2:30 p.m. in the East Lot, where players will meet supporters, sign autographs, and take part in games, food, and music from DJ JoJo.

The team also has a special pregame ceremony planned, along with a laser show and puck drop. The first 7,000 fans inside the arena will receive a special Gulls aloha shirt.

Tonight also opens an eight-game season series between San Diego and Henderson. The Gulls are 17-16-2-3 all-time against the Silver Knights and 11-6-1-1 at home.

The two teams also met in San Diego’s home opener last season, when Henderson came away with the win. This time, the Gulls are looking for a different result as they introduce a new roster and coaching staff to their home crowd.

San Diego comes into the opener after playing the Coachella Valley Firebirds last night at Acrisure Arena, where the Gulls fell 6-3. Ryan Carpenter scored first for San Diego, picking up his first goal of the season in his 800th professional hockey game.

"He’s our veteran," head coach Dave Manson said. "He’s one of our shepherds of the group and we need Carpy to be very good every night. He’s seen everything the league has to offer, so his experience is valuable to our younger guys."

Matthew Phillips also scored in the game and now has 2-1=3 points this season. Across his 413 career AHL games, Phillips has 142-213=355. Cruz Lucius added another milestone, making his AHL debut and scoring his first career goal for San Diego’s third goal of the night.

"He’s got a lot of skill and a lot of high hockey IQ," Carpenter said. "He starts off a turnover and there was a nice little give and go with him and [ Anton] Wahlberg, who made a heck of a pass too on that play. It was on and off his stick real quick and yeah congrats to him for getting his first goal in his first game."

After tonight, the Gulls return to Pechanga Arena on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for their first regular-season matchup against the Ontario Reign at 7 p.m. PDT.

Ducks Got An Unexpected Spark In Winnipeg And It Could Matter

The Ducks left Winnipeg with a result that stood out even beyond the score sheet, rolling past the Jets and getting a surprisingly lively night from the bottom of the lineup. Anaheims fourth line of Judd Caulfield, Tim Washe and Jeff Malott all chipped in offensively, giving the group a rare kind of depth contribution while Luk Dostl settled things down with 15 saves at Canada Life Centre.

For a team that is still trying to find traction, nights like this can matter because they hint at support beyond the usual names. Sam Colangelo, Mikael Granlund and Nikita Nesterenko also found the net, and the Ducks will take plenty from a road win that came against a Winnipeg team that had not slipped in regulation before. Ducks Prospect Gives Anaheim Fans A Reason To Watch San Diego

The Gulls had plenty of reasons to keep Anaheim fans checking in from afar on Sunday night, even in a 6-3 loss to the Coachella Valley Firebirds at Acrisure Arena. San Diego got on the board first, with Ryan Carpenter providing the opener in a game that also served as another reminder of how much veteran experience still runs through the Ducks development pipeline.

Cruz Lucius added the most intriguing note of the night, giving the Gulls a fresh storyline in his professional debut, while Laurent Brossoit made his second start of the season and stopped 24 shots. The result did not tilt San Diegos way, but performances like that are exactly why Ducks fans will keep an eye on the Gulls, where a few small milestones can still carry real weight for the organization.
