The Ducks’ first days of training camp already come with a few injury questions.
Anaheim announced Friday that forward Ryan Poehling will miss practice and is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Defenseman Ian Moore is dealing with a lower-body injury as well, and the team said he’s expected to be out 2-4 weeks. Forward Herman Traff also did not skate Friday because of illness.
The club did not say when Poehling or Moore were hurt.
For Poehling, the timing is an unwelcome reminder of how last spring ended. In Game 5 of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he was struck by a late hit from Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb.
Poehling left that game and did not return for the rest of the series, which ended with the Ducks being eliminated in the next contest. McNabb was suspended for that game after receiving a major penalty for the hit.
Before the injury, Poehling had become a useful postseason piece for Anaheim. The former St.
Cloud State standout finished with four goals and five points in 11 games, including a controversial game-winning goal against the Edmonton Oilers in the opening round. He also set a career high with 36 points during the regular season, a stretch that earned him a four-year contract extension in March.
Moore’s absence is the more concerning one when it comes to the start of the season. Anaheim opens the 2026-27 campaign on Oct. 2 against the Golden Knights, and that 2-4 week recovery window makes it possible he won’t be ready for Game 1 and could miss multiple games to begin the year.
The 24-year-old is coming off his first full season of pro hockey, with most of it spent in Anaheim. He played four games for the San Diego Gulls, the Ducks’ AHL affiliate, and totaled four goals and 12 points in 67 games with Anaheim while posting a minus-14 rating and averaging 13:40 of ice time. He also scored once in 10 playoff games.
Traff is preparing for his first full season in North America. The 2024 third-round pick joined San Diego late last season after putting up 41 points in 51 games for IK Oskarshamn of HockeyAllsvenskan in Sweden. He went scoreless in three games with the Gulls and is expected to begin this season with San Diego.
