Ducks At Center Of Heated McDavid Incident Fans Will Debate

Connor McDavid voices concerns over player safety following a contentious incident against the Ducks that echoes past injury woes.

Connor McDavid didn’t hide how he felt after Thursday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers captain took issue with a first-period sequence that sent him crashing into the far post, calling it a dangerous play and making clear the hit stuck with him.

Midway through the opening period, McDavid drove the net from the right side and was knocked into the post by Ducks defenceman Drew Helleson. McDavid stayed down briefly before getting up and skating over to Helleson to exchange words. Not long after, Oilers winger Vasily Podkolzin jumped in and fought Helleson, landing a few hard right hands before officials stepped in.

Podkolzin was given the only five-minute major of the fight and was ejected, a ruling McDavid said he didn’t like.

“I thought [Podkolzin] stepped in there. It was unfortunate too.

I’ve never seen that called before so, it was unfortunate there for sure. But I appreciate the response obviously,” he said of his teammate.

McDavid said the play brought back memories of a similar incident in 2019, when then-Calgary Flames defenceman Mark Giordano drove him into the net and he suffered a knee injury in the final game of the season, an injury that forced him to spend much of the summer rehabbing.

He said Thursday’s play hit “close to home” for him.

“I wish that we treated the net like we treat the end wall, you know? If I do that to him, go Mach 1 into the end wall it’s a five-game suspension and everything like that.

The net is just as dangerous in my opinion. With the goalie there, the post there, it’s just as dangerous.”

McDavid also pushed back on the idea that he overreacted when he went after Helleson.

“I think people have me pegged as some type of robot, but I’ve got feelings and emotions too and when that comes out, it can rile a game up. And obviously I appreciated the response from Podzy.

As I said, I thought it was an unfortunate call. Didn’t like the call really one bit.

It is what it is,” he said.

He briefly left the Oilers’ bench but returned and finished with 24:25 of ice time in Edmonton’s 5-4 loss. McDavid scored a goal and added three assists, extending his point streak to 17 games and pushing his season total to 40 points in just 16 games.

Ducks Young Core Just Delivered A Road Win Fans Will Notice

The Ducks left Edmonton with a 5-4 road win that had plenty for their fans to chew on, and it came with a strong showing from two of the organizations younger pieces. Pavel Mintyukov and Beckett Sennecke each played a central role in the attack, while Laurent Brossoit backed it up with 23 saves as Anaheim found a way to keep pace in a game that had the feel of a showcase for the next wave.

Connor McDavid still did Connor McDavid things, scoring once and adding three assists to stretch his points streak to 17 games this season, but Anaheim did enough to survive the push. The Oilers were also forced to turn to Matt Tomkins in goal, and with the Ducks taking advantage of the situation, this was the kind of result that can linger for a young team trying to build some credibility on the road. Ducks Fans Had Every Reason To Debate This First-Period Fight Call

The first-period scrap between Vasily Podkolzin and Drew Helleson gave Ducks fans plenty to chew on in real time, and not just because it was the kind of early-game dustup that can set a tone. Podkolzin went after Helleson in an NHL game between Edmonton and Anaheim, and the officials sorted through a call that immediately had both benches and the crowd taking notice.

For Anaheim, the debate centered on how the penalties were handed out after the fight, especially with Helleson involved in his first NHL bout. Podkolzin was hit with an instigator minor, a fighting major and a game misconduct, while Helleson came away with only a roughing minor, leaving the Ducks with a result that felt as notable as the fight itself. Ducks Nearly Faced A Brutal Pavel Mintyukov Contract Drama

Pavel Mintyukovs rise in Anaheim has moved quickly enough that the Ducks had to act fast to keep the defenseman in the fold. Drafted 10th overall in 2022, Mintyukov has already become a notable part of the blue line, and his agent, Dan Milstein, said the young blueliner drew interest from multiple NHL teams before contract talks with Anaheim turned serious.

What makes the new agreement notable is how close the situation came to getting complicated. Mintyukov made it clear he wanted to remain with the Ducks, and once those discussions picked up, the sides were able to get a deal done within two days, avoiding what could have turned into a much messier stretch for a player who has six points in 12 games this season.
