Ducks Affiliate Faces Early Test As Firebirds Visit San Diego

With both teams eager to break their tie in points, the Gulls are set to leverage home advantage against the struggling Firebirds in a crucial early-season showdown.

The San Diego Gulls get another crack at Coachella Valley tonight, and this time the backdrop is a four-game homestand they badly want to make count.

Pechanga Arena San Diego hosts the rematch at 7 p.m. PDT, with the Gulls opening a stretch that also includes visits from the San Jose Barracuda, Henderson Silver Knights and Colorado Eagles. San Diego has been solid enough at home so far, going 1-1-0-0, and assistant coach Steve McCarthy made clear the upcoming slate is one the group needs to seize.

"That's something that we have to take advantage of," assistant coach Steve McCarthy said. "Obviously, a little bit of a tougher schedule to start the season.

We're at .500. Obviously, we'd like to have more, but we're happy where we’re at.

We got a little bit of a homestand that we definitely have to take advantage of."

These teams already know each other well. Coachella Valley took the first meeting, a 6-3 win on Friday, Oct. 9 at Acrisure Arena, and both clubs now sit at seven points. San Diego is 3-3-1-0, while the Firebirds are 2-2-2-1.

The contrast in recent form tilts toward the Gulls. They arrive off a 3-2 overtime win over the Tucson Roadrunners on Saturday, Oct. 17, a response after being shut out the night before.

Nico Myatovic provided the spark with both the game-opening goal and the overtime winner, while Matthew Phillips scored on the power play for San Diego’s fourth goal with the man advantage this season. Stian Solberg, Anton Wahlberg and Nathan Gaucher each picked up assists.

Coachella Valley, meanwhile, has lost four straight. The Firebirds were swept in a back-to-back against the Abbotsford Canucks and have managed just two points over their last four games, coming from an overtime loss to the Ontario Reign and a shootout loss to Abbotsford. Their last win was the one over the Gulls.

San Diego’s confidence has also been shaped by what it has gotten in net. Laurent Brossoit and Damian Clara have formed a goaltending tandem that has steadied the group early in the season.

Brossoit, in his 10th AHL season, has a 2.85 GAA in four appearances. Clara, in his first season in North America, has posted a 2.28 GAA and a .920 SV% in three appearances.

"I think it’s great having a veteran like LB around," goaltending coach Jeff Glass said. "He’s seen a lot; he’s been in a lot of scenarios.

One of my favorite things I’m getting to know about him is he’s had some adversity in his career. He’s had to bounce back twice from injuries, and I think for a lot of people it would have been easy to quit.

He’s a model citizen for what it means to persevere and really dedicate himself to the game, and I think that’s infectious so that’s wearing off on Damian for sure. Then with Damian, it’s a young guy that’s pushing.

It’s his first-year pro and I think it keeps LB on; he knows that there’s a young guy here that’s learning the game and LB’s job is to win us games but it’s also to help mentor Damian."

Ducks Got A Tough Islanders Look They May See Again

Early in the 2026-27 season, the Islanders have already had to improvise with injuries thinning their forward group, and the ripple effect showed up in a recent game against the Ducks. With Mathew Barzal, Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli unavailable, Kyle MacLean and Mitchell Chaffee were pushed into the lineup and into a fourth-line role alongside Casey Cizikas, giving New York a different kind of look than the one Anaheim might normally expect to see.

What stood out for the Ducks was how hard that unit played. MacLean and Chaffee brought a physical edge, handled their defensive responsibilities and gave the Islanders a more rugged bottom-six presence in a game that got attention from the coaching staff for the way they fit into the matchup. Anaheim may not be seeing the same exact lineup next time, but the Islanders have made it clear they can still lean on role players to change the tone when the roster is short-handed. [Read more 🡒]

Ducks Suddenly Have A Troubling Pattern Fans Cant Ignore

A rough stretch keeps following the Ducks around, and the latest stop only deepened the concern. Anaheim dropped a 3-2 decision to the Islanders at UBS Arena, a loss that extended the skid to four straight games. Frank Vatrano found the net for Anaheim, while Luk Dostl turned aside 22 shots in a game where the Ducks again needed more offense than they could produce.

The more troubling part is how familiar these nights are starting to look. New York got goals from Ondrej Palat, Victor Eklund and Simon Holmstrom, and Anaheim never fully recovered from the early damage. With the losses piling up, the Ducks are left trying to find a cleaner, more complete effort before the slide starts to feel even heavier. [Read more 🡒]
