Bruins Trade Tough Forward to Ducks in Unexpected Roster Shakeup

In a move that signals both roster adjustment and future planning, the Bruins have dealt a gritty winger to Anaheim in exchange for a draft pick.

The Boston Bruins made a move on Friday that signals a shift in their roster dynamics, trading forward Jeffrey Viel to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. Viel, known for his physical edge and willingness to drop the gloves, brings that gritty presence to Anaheim - something the Ducks have been known to value as they continue to build a tougher, more competitive lineup.

Viel, 28, has carved out a career the hard way. Undrafted and signed by the San Jose Sharks back in 2019, he's earned every minute of his 64 NHL games through sheer persistence and a blue-collar brand of hockey.

This season, he’s tallied 30 penalty minutes and 27 hits - numbers that speak to the kind of role he plays. He’s not afraid to get into the dirty areas, stir the pot, and stand up for teammates.

That kind of physicality doesn’t always show up on the scoresheet, but it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed on the ice.

In return, the Bruins receive a fourth-round pick from Anaheim - specifically, the earlier of two picks the Ducks currently own (originally from either Detroit or Philadelphia). While it’s not a blockbuster return, it gives Boston another chip to play with come draft time, and perhaps more importantly, a little more flexibility on the roster.

That flexibility was put to use immediately. With Viel’s departure, the Bruins called up defenseman Billy Sweezey from AHL Providence to fill the open spot.

Sweezey’s been solid in the minors this season, posting one goal and 10 assists over 34 games. He’s not exactly known for flashy offensive numbers, but he brings steady, dependable play on the back end.

Sweezey, a Massachusetts native from Hanson, has already seen a taste of NHL action - nine games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he recorded one assist. Now, he gets the chance to suit up for his hometown team, a moment that has to carry some extra weight for the 27-year-old blueliner.

The Bruins, meanwhile, are gearing up for their next matchup - a Saturday night tilt on the road against the Chicago Blackhawks. With some fresh roster movement and a new face in the mix, it’ll be worth watching how the team adjusts and how Sweezey fits into the lineup.
