In a heated moment during Thursday's game against the Anaheim Ducks, the Toronto Maple Leafs faced criticism for their lack of response to a knee-on-knee hit that sidelined their captain, Auston Matthews. The hit, delivered by Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas, left Matthews with a lower-body injury and sparked a conversation about the team's on-ice reaction.
Elliotte Friedman, speaking on the "32 Thoughts" podcast, didn't hold back. He questioned why Toronto players didn't stand up for Matthews immediately after the incident.
"There were players on the ice for the Maple Leafs who noticed the hit and didn’t do anything about it," Friedman remarked. "It sure looks like this year has kind of broken the spirit of that hockey team a bit, and they’re gonna have to recover it in the off-season."
The hit took place late in the second period, resulting in Gudas receiving a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Matthews, who had just ended a 12-game goal drought with a power-play score, was forced to leave the game.
Morgan Rielly, a key defenseman for Toronto, acknowledged the oversight in not reacting swiftly. "I didn’t have a good view of it just because the puck was going the other way, but it’s on me for not responding earlier to Gudas being there," Rielly admitted. He took full responsibility for not being quicker to support his captain, emphasizing the need for a collective response when a teammate is targeted.
Despite the controversy, the Maple Leafs managed to break an eight-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over Anaheim. William Nylander stepped up with the go-ahead goal early in the third period, and goaltender Joseph Woll impressed with 36 saves.
However, Matthews' condition remains a pressing concern as Toronto, currently last in the Atlantic Division with a 28-27-11 record, faces an uncertain path ahead. The team will need to rally not just on the scoreboard but in their camaraderie and resilience as they navigate the remainder of the season.
