The 2026 Alabama football roster is going to look young on paper, and the numbers back that up. RotoWire’s age calculation puts the Crimson Tide at 20.04 years, tied for No. 117 among FBS teams. That makes Alabama one of the younger rosters in college football, but not an outlier in a way that should trigger alarm.
In fact, the broader age picture around the sport shows Alabama in a crowded middle. The average age for 2026 college football rosters is 20.3 years.
LSU sits just ahead of Alabama at 20.12 and is ranked No. 103.
Four SEC teams are even younger: Texas A&M at 20.01, Tennessee at 19.92, Texas at 19.86, and Georgia, which checks in as the youngest team in college football at 19.81 years.
That youth, though, is being treated by some pundits as a reason to doubt Alabama’s Playoff chances. The defensive side of the ball doesn’t really fit that concern.
If Terrance Green and QB Reese are starters, only one projected defensive starter, Dijon Lee, would have fewer than two years of college football experience. Seven projected defensive starters are expected to be fourth-, fifth-, or sixth-year players.
Offense is where the inexperience shows up more clearly. As many as seven projected starters could be second-year players, though Michael Caroll and Lotzieir Brooks already logged plenty of snaps last season. Still, there should be some growing pains for that unit.
Several likely starters will need live reps to bring their upside to life, including Jackson Lloyd, Keelon Russell, Kaleb Edwards, and Derek Meadows. Jayvin James is another possible starter, and while he is a fourth-year player, he has only 18 starts with previous programs. Alabama is also expected to get freshman contributions in rotational roles from running back EJ Crowell and receiver Cederian Morgan.
By the time Alabama lines up against Georgia, those young and inexperienced players will have already gone through five games of the 2026 season. The learning curve will still be there, but it should be a lot less steep by then.
