Dan Orlovsky isn't one to follow the crowd. The former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst is making waves with his take on the 2026 NFL draft class, declaring Alabama's Ty Simpson as "QB one" and the standout quarterback of the group.
During a segment on ESPN's "Get Up," Orlovsky didn't hold back. "I would much rather have Ty," he stated, emphasizing his preference for Simpson over Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, despite acknowledging Mendoza's skills. Orlovsky's stance is clear: he'd choose Simpson in the 15-to-20 draft range over Mendoza at the top spot.
Orlovsky's analysis dives deep into the quarterbacks' performances. He questions which player had to carry their team more and who dominated more games over the season. For him, the answer is unequivocally Ty Simpson.
Simpson's stats back up Orlovsky's confidence. Leading the SEC with 305 completions and 473 pass attempts, Simpson racked up 3,567 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. Orlovsky highlights Simpson's ability to handle pressure, a crucial trait that distinguishes good quarterbacks from great ones.
"Ty Simpson is more consistent under pressure," Orlovsky noted. He pointed out that while Mendoza doesn't panic often, there are moments when he defaults to running. Simpson, on the other hand, stays composed and delivers those critical NFL throws-those 15-, 20-, 25-yard in routes, crossing routes, and deep corner sails.
When it comes to downfield passes and throwing on the move, Orlovsky sees both quarterbacks as fairly matched. However, in crucial moments requiring big throws, he firmly believes Simpson has the edge.
