Two weeks remain in the Alabama high school football regular season, and plenty is still unsettled. Region titles, playoff spots and seeding position are all hanging in the balance, which makes Week 9 one of the most important stretches of the year.
The headliners are spread across the state, but a few games stand out right away. Thompson gets another major measuring-stick opportunity against unbeaten Prattville.
Alexandria can move a step closer to its first region championship in five years with a trip to Leeds. Gadsden City and Buckhorn are locked in a tight Class 6A playoff race.
And Etowah County travels to Oneonta in a game that could decide the Class 3A, Region 6 championship.
Thompson has been living through a demanding schedule, and Friday’s showdown with Prattville fits right into that run. The Warriors have already stacked up quality wins and are sitting firmly among Alabama’s championship contenders. Another victory here would only sharpen that résumé, especially after beating programs such as Class 5A power Clay-Chalkville.
Quarterback Trent Seaborn has been at the center of it all for Thompson. The Alabama commit threw for 351 yards and three touchdowns in a 47-17 win over Hewitt-Trussville, hitting 19 of 24 passes. CJ Cowley also did damage on the ground, rushing for 81 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.
That win wasn’t just about offense, either. Thompson’s defense slammed the door in the second half after the Warriors took a 31-17 lead into the break, keeping Hewitt-Trussville off the board after halftime.
Prattville comes in unbeaten and with a chance to claim one of the biggest regular-season victories in the state. For the Lions, this is a chance to see how they stack up against one of Class 7A’s standard-bearers. For Thompson, it’s another chance to prove the results are real against elite competition.
Alexandria’s matchup with Leeds carries a different kind of pressure, but the stakes are just as clear. The Valley Cubs have been one of the state’s most impressive teams and now have a chance to keep pushing toward that first region championship in five years.
They’ve been rolling since surviving a 35-28 battle with defending state champion Moody in Week 2. Since then, Alexandria has won five straight by an average of 17.8 points, with senior quarterback Cole Wheeler and running back J.J. Beason driving the offense.
Wheeler has completed 71.5% of his passes and thrown for more than 1,200 yards. Beason has been just as dangerous on the ground, piling up 876 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns through seven games. That balance gives Alexandria a real punch on both sides of the ball.
Leeds, though, has had the upper hand in this matchup lately. The all-time series is tied 5-5, but the Green Wave have won the last two meetings and three of the past five. Leeds will try to keep that recent edge alive and slow Alexandria’s march toward the region crown.
The most urgent playoff math of the week might be found in the Class 6A, Region 4 race, where Gadsden City visits Buckhorn. The Titans, the Bucks and Bob Jones are tied for third place, and only two postseason spots are left. That leaves very little room for error.
Gadsden City has gained steam behind Auburn commit Sam Sollie. The Titans have averaged 46.25 points over their last four games, including a 34-14 win over Huntsville.
In that game, Sollie threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a score. Amir Thomas added 66 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Buckhorn is coming off a big night of its own. The Bucks scored a season-high 66 points in a 66-14 win over Grissom and have now won four straight home games.
The region schedule makes this one even trickier. Bob Jones has already beaten Buckhorn and still has Gadsden City left in the regular-season finale.
That means Friday’s result could tilt the entire picture. A Titans win would give them a stronger position before that final meeting with Bob Jones.
A Buckhorn win would keep the Bucks alive and complicate everything even more.
Etowah County and Oneonta close the list, but not the stakes. Their matchup at Gilbreath Stadium could settle the Class 3A, Region 6 championship.
Both teams are coming off dominant offensive performances. Oneonta beat Susan Moore 56-14 last week and is averaging 42.8 points per game. Quarterback Sam Garrison runs the offense and gives the team the kind of attack that can create quick separation.
Etowah County answered with its own statement, blanking Hanceville 56-0 in its last outing. The Blue Devils now face a much tougher assignment against an Oneonta group that has been putting up points all season.
The key battle may be Etowah County’s defense against Garrison and the Oneonta offense. If the Blue Devils can keep explosive plays in check and avoid falling behind early, they’ll give themselves a real shot. If this turns into a shootout, Oneonta’s scoring pace makes it tough to bet against the hosts.
That’s the theme of Week 9 overall: everything still matters. Thompson and Prattville are chasing unbeaten finishes and championship credibility.
Alexandria is hunting a region title. Gadsden City and Buckhorn are trying to lock down playoff ground.
Etowah County and Oneonta may settle a region race right on the field.
With the postseason looming, Friday’s results could echo well beyond this week.

SEC Response To Alabamas Georgia Frustration Wont Ease Many Fans
The aftermath of Alabamas loss to Georgia has kept the focus on more than just the scoreboard, with plenty of frustration aimed at several officiating decisions that drew heavy attention in the moment and even more after the game. Among the disputed calls was a no-call on a potential pass interference, one of several sequences that left Alabama fans searching for answers after a game already loaded with stakes and tension.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey addressed the broader issue by saying the conference does not comment on judgment calls made by officials, while also noting how difficult the job is and how the league reviews mistakes tied to rule application. For Alabama supporters, though, that explanation is unlikely to calm much of the anger, especially when the biggest flashpoints from the game are still the ones everyone keeps replaying. Georgia's Alabama Win Just Got More Complicated For Kirby Smart
Georgias win over Alabama in Week 6 gave Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs a huge early-season boost, but it also came with a reminder that staying unbeaten can be just as much about surviving the injury report as it is about beating ranked opponents. Georgia is now No. 1 after the 20-17 win, and Smart has already had to address a running back room that has been thinned out enough to force a committee approach.
Chauncey Bowens is the latest concern, with the junior sidelined by a lower-body injury and set to miss the upcoming Auburn game. There is no timetable for his return, and with Nate Frazier also part of the injury mix, Georgias depth at a key spot is becoming something to watch even as the Bulldogs try to keep their momentum rolling. Alabamas Tennessee Test Could Come Down To A Few Unexpected Names
As Alabama turns toward Tennessee, the focus is not just on the usual stars but on a few names that may need to matter more than planned. Noah Rogers, Mal Waldrep, London Simmons and Carmelo O'Neal are all in position to have their roles stretched by injuries and shifting team needs, which can force a staff to lean on depth in a hurry. In a game like this, those kinds of midweek adjustments can shape everything from the opening rotation to the way Alabama tries to manage the line of scrimmage and the back end.
The challenge is that Tennessee does not offer a gentle place to introduce unfamiliar pieces. Any increased workload for Rogers, Waldrep, Simmons or O'Neal would come in a difficult environment, where execution tends to matter as much as experience. Alabama does not need every backup to become a headline, but it may need one or two of these players to settle the game in ways that are not always obvious until the matchup starts to unfold.
