A top-15 SEC matchup is waiting in Week 7, and Alabama enters it with a real chance to steady itself after last week’s loss to Georgia. The Crimson Tide, led by Keelon Russell, head to face the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers with both teams sitting at 5-1 and plenty on the line in the CFP race.
Alabama is listed as an 8.5-point road favorite, and that number makes sense given how different these offenses have looked so far. Tennessee has beaten Auburn and Arkansas in back-to-back SEC games, but it has also struggled to threaten defenses through the air. The Volunteers rank 121st in EPA/Pass on offense and 126th in pass play success rate, and they’ve used three different quarterbacks in 2026.
That’s a rough setup against an Alabama team that has been explosive and efficient in almost every game. The Crimson Tide rank No. 16 in adjusted EPA/Play and No. 4 in success rate on offense, while also sitting seventh in adjusted EPA/Play on defense. Bama has topped 45 points against everyone except Georgia through six weeks, and it’s hard to ignore that kind of ceiling.
Russell is still one of the biggest reasons Alabama is in this spot. The sophomore was quiet against Georgia, finishing 16 of 30 for 185 yards and a touchdown while adding 41 rushing yards on nine carries. But he had thrown 10 touchdown passes over the previous three games before that setback, and he’s up to 16 total touchdowns - 12 through the air and four on the ground - with just two interceptions in six games.
Tennessee’s defense has been solid enough to make things interesting. The Vols are 32nd in adjusted EPA/Play and 14th in EPA/Pass allowed, so this isn’t a soft landing spot for Russell. Even so, Alabama looks like the team with the more reliable passing game and the more complete roster on both sides of the ball.
The Tide came up short against Georgia, but nothing in that performance suggests they’re suddenly off track. One or two calls, the source here noted, could have changed how that game played out. Even with that loss, Alabama still looks like a team capable of pushing back into the top 10 and keeping itself firmly in the playoff mix.
Tennessee, meanwhile, has yet to score more than 24 points in an SEC game. It lost by three to Texas and then followed with wins over Auburn by 10 and Arkansas by seven. That’s a decent run, but it doesn’t stack up well next to what Alabama has done offensively.
The pick here leans toward the Crimson Tide handling the step up in class and doing enough to cover. Alabama is 4-2 against the spread in 2026, and this feels like a matchup where its offense should create separation.

Kirby Smarts Leaked Message Adds Sting To Alabama Loss
A locker room speech from Kirby Smart has added a fresh layer to Alabamas latest painful loss, after the Georgia coach confirmed a leaked message that surfaced from inside the Bulldogs postgame celebration. The speech, delivered with plenty of fire and strong language, was aimed squarely at the Crimson Tide before Georgias 20-17 win, and it quickly became another talking point around a game that already carried plenty of weight.
For Alabama, the sting is less about the words themselves than what they represented in the moment. Smarts comments underscored how personal and intense the matchup felt on Georgias side, and the fact that they were later confirmed only made the episode harder to ignore for a team already dealing with the disappointment of coming up just short. Alabama Faces A Tough Dijon Lee Decision With Tennessee Next
Dijon Lees late hit against Georgia did more than tack on a penalty in the closing seconds. It helped seal Alabamas 20-17 loss and quickly turned the freshman cornerback into one of the biggest questions hanging over the defense as the Crimson Tide move into another rivalry week.
Brian Wommack didnt hide his disappointment in Lees actions and made clear there will be accountability, with reduced playing time among the possibilities. Alabama now has to balance discipline with preparation, and with Tennessee waiting next Saturday, the Tide have little time to sort out how they want to handle one of the games most costly mistakes. Alabamas Playoff Push Runs Through A Tennessee Problem It Must Exploit
Tennessees quarterback situation has become one of the central storylines heading into its meeting with Alabama, and it is hard to ignore how much that matters for a Crimson Tide team still trying to strengthen its playoff case. With Faizon Brandon dealing with injuries and George MacIntyre having to shoulder the offense, the Volunteers enter the matchup with questions at the most important spot on the field, while Alabama can focus on what it needs to do to keep the pressure on in the race for the postseason.
For Alabama, the task is not just about getting after the quarterback. The Tide also have to be sharp against Tennessees rushing game, because that is the area where the Volunteers can still create problems even when the passing game is uneven. Alabama has already spent time adjusting defensively with that in mind, and the outcome could shape both the game and where the Crimson Tide stand when the playoff picture gets clearer.
