Lane Kiffin’s return to Ole Miss this weekend came with the kind of reception you’d expect in a conference fight that’s been simmering for years. But the bigger story wasn’t the welcome he got. It was the latest round of school-versus-league friction, with LSU and the SEC locked in a messy standoff over two former NFL training camp cuts, Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, whom LSU tried to bring back to college for the 2026 roster.
The league dug in. LSU dug in.
Lawsuits followed on both sides, and so did a pile of resentment before LSU ultimately backed off. The whole episode, with Lane Kiffin waiting until literally the last minute to decide against it and the alleged influence of Louisiana Gov.
Jeff Landry over all things Tigers hanging over the situation, turned into one of the sharpest school-conference clashes the SEC has seen.
And LSU is hardly alone. College sports has a long list of programs taking on the leagues they belong to, and some of those battles have been nasty enough to leave a mark.
Michigan’s fight with the Big Ten in 2023 was one of the most public. When the conference suspended coach Jim Harbaugh during the sign-stealing investigation, outgoing UM Director of Athletics Warde Manuel blasted the process as "completely unethical," even as Michigan’s own conduct made that criticism land with a thud. The school tried to stop the suspension with a temporary restraining order, but Harbaugh still served all three games.
Florida State took its shot at the ACC in 2023, too. Recently fired AD Michael Alford went after the league over revenue issues, and the school eventually sued over media rights and exit policies.
The lawsuit didn’t read like a simple disagreement over contract language; it accused the ACC of incompetence and bad faith. Clemson filed on the same grounds, though it kept the public shots at the league far quieter than FSU did.
After a year and a half of litigation, the cases were settled in the summer of 2025.
Washington’s clash with the Pac-10 dates all the way back to 1993, when the conference handled the primary discipline in an investigation into recruiting violations and improper benefits to players. The Pac-10 hit the Huskies with a two-year bowl ban, scholarship reductions and forfeiture of TV revenue. Coach Don James resigned in response and tore into the conference on the way out, while UW administrators also made their anger public.
Texas A&M’s break with the Big 12 in 2011 had a different spark, but the same kind of frustration. The Longhorn Network was at the center of it, and A&M wasn’t happy with Texas’ plans with ESPN or with the Big 12’s response.
Former A&M President Bowen Loftin summed up the feeling this way: Dan Beebe was "perfectly willing to provide rubber-stamp approval for virtually anything that Texas proposed." The Aggies’ move to the SEC came out of that fallout.
