In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Ryan Coleman-Williams, formerly known as Ryan Williams, is gearing up for his junior season with the Crimson Tide. This talented wide receiver has embraced a new chapter, adding his mother’s last name to honor her influence in his life. Along with the name change, he’s returning to the No. 1 jersey, a nod to his standout high school days with the Spartans.
Coleman-Williams shared, “I have a legacy I want to write, and my mom has a strong part in that… she’s my best friend. I want to represent my family the best way I can.”
A Journey from Star Recruit to College Standout
Arriving in Tuscaloosa as a five-star recruit, Coleman-Williams made an immediate impact. Graduating early at 17, he quickly became a key player, racking up nearly 900 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in his freshman year, earning Freshman All-America honors.
Overcoming Sophomore Setbacks
The sophomore season posed challenges, with drops and injuries slowing his progress. Yet, Coleman-Williams views these hurdles as valuable lessons.
“It wasn’t necessarily disappointment, but I had a lot of learning lessons last year,” he reflected. “It’s never a loss, it’s a lesson… and I’m thankful for those lessons.”
Aiming for a Fresh Start
The changes in name and jersey number symbolize a fresh start for Coleman-Williams. “It’s just an opportunity to have a hard reset… just make me feel like myself again,” he explained.
Alabama’s offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, emphasized the focus on maximizing Coleman-Williams’ potential. “He’s so naturally talented… such a hard worker and a great kid,” Grubb noted.
“We’ve just got to make sure we’re getting him enough touches. If we can’t get him the ball down the field, we’ve got to find ways to get it to him early.”
As Alabama continues spring practice, all eyes will be on Coleman-Williams as he prepares to showcase his skills at the annual A-Day game at Bryant-Denny Stadium on April 11.
