Ryan Coleman-Williams is walking into his junior season with the kind of buzz that disappeared by the end of last year.
That’s a sharp turn from where he stood after his freshman breakout, when he arrived as a 17-year-old and looked like one of the faces of college football. His sophomore year never matched that promise. Drops became the story, the big moments came too rarely, and by season’s end he had slipped from must-watch star to an afterthought.
Even so, the belief in Coleman-Williams is back in Tuscaloosa.
Inside Alabama, the signs point to a major rebound. He has added weight, taken on more of a vocal leadership role, and spent the offseason working to clean up the hands issues that haunted him a year ago. The expectation is that the version of Coleman-Williams Alabama gets this fall will look a lot more like the player who exploded onto the scene than the one who faded late last season.
That confidence showed up at SEC Media Days, too. On Friday, the media voters for the All-SEC teams placed Coleman-Williams on the preseason All-SEC first team.
Coleman-Williams was one of three Alabama players to land on the preseason All-SEC first team, and his selection drew some eyebrows. There are players who posted stronger numbers last season, but the pick says plenty about what people around the league think he can become as a junior.
The comparison that naturally comes up is the familiar Alabama wide receiver pattern. Julio Jones and Amari Cooper both had what were labeled “down” sophomore seasons after breakout freshman years, then came roaring back with huge junior campaigns before becoming high NFL Draft picks. Coleman-Williams is now trying to follow that same path.
He’ll be the centerpiece of what should be one of the nation’s best receiver groups. Sophomore Lotzeir Brooks is back after a breakout freshman season and was one of the heroes in Alabama’s come-from-behind win over Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff.
Behind those two, junior Rico Scott, sophomore Derek Meadows, and freshman Cederian Morgan are all in the mix for a starting job while injured NC State transfer Noah Rogers is out. Rogers is still expected to play a significant role once he returns.
For all the frustration of last season, Coleman-Williams remains one of the most electric players in the sport. He may have lost some trust from Ty Simpson and the coaching staff because of the drops, but defenders still know exactly what happens when he gets the ball in space.
If the hands are fixed, the rest of college football may be reminded very quickly why Coleman-Williams was such a big deal in the first place. And if that happens, All-SEC honors might end up feeling like only the beginning.
