Nick Saban turned heads on “College GameDay” with the kind of pick nobody on the panel saw coming.
Asked about Alabama’s matchup with LSU, Saban went against the rest of the desk and backed the Crimson Tide.
“This is one of the most unusual home deals you’ve ever seen,” Saban said of the Alabama-LSU game. “LSU beats Alabama when Alabama’s at home. Alabama beats LSU more when they are playing at LSU, which is a tough place to play.
“I think Bama gets it right. I’m all in on Alabama on this one.”
The reaction around him made it clear the pick landed as a surprise. Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and guest picker Jason Sudeikis all went with LSU instead, while Kirk Herbstreit did not make a pick because he is calling the game.
Howard said, “This is a tough one to pick,” before choosing LSU. “I’m going with LSU, simply because they are at home.
(LSU QB) Sam Leavitt is playing at a very high level right now, not turning the ball over ... I’m going with the Bayou Bengals.”
McAfee also landed on LSU. “Give me LSU,” he said.
“Just because of what we saw in that first week against Clemson. Sam Leavitt is playing better.
They still have a path to get in. They know they have to win this at home.
I like LSU.”
Sudeikis stayed with the home team too, though his reasoning had less to do with football than basketball. “Pistol Pete Maravich is my favorite basketball player, even though I never got to see him play. Going LSU.”
The rest of the panel’s weekly picks were a mixed bag, with one unanimous call and several split decisions.
For Oregon at Ohio State, every picker went with Ohio State: Howard, Saban, McAfee, Sudeikis and Herbstreit.
At UCLA at Minnesota, Howard, Saban and Herbstreit chose Minnesota, while McAfee and Sudeikis took UCLA.
For Texas at Missouri, Howard, Saban and Sudeikis picked Texas, while McAfee and Herbstreit went with Missouri.
Kentucky at Tennessee drew four Tennessee picks, with Howard, Saban, Sudeikis and Herbstreit all going that way. McAfee chose Kentucky.
Georgia at Ole Miss was another lopsided one. Howard, Saban, Sudeikis and Herbstreit all picked Georgia, while McAfee took Ole Miss.
BYU at Utah followed the same pattern: Howard, Saban, Sudeikis and Herbstreit chose Utah, and McAfee picked BYU.
Miami at Notre Dame closed out the slate with Howard on Miami and Saban, McAfee, Sudeikis and Herbstreit on Notre Dame. McAfee summed up his lean with a nod to the setting: “I would recommend this Notre Dame campus to anybody..
This place is different and you can feel how special it is..

Stephen A. Just Turned Up The Pressure On Kalen DeBoer
Alabamas season has reached the point where every stumble gets magnified, and Stephen A. Smith made sure the latest one landed with extra force. With the Crimson Tide sitting at 6-2, the spotlight has only intensified on Kalen DeBoer, whose first year in Tuscaloosa has already been measured against the programs usual standard of near-perfection and playoff contention.
The timing matters because LSU is next, and it is the kind of game that can either steady the season or deepen the questions around where Alabama is headed. Smiths criticism only adds to the pressure surrounding a team that is still ranked, still in the mix, and still expected to look more like Alabama, even as the margin for error keeps shrinking. Alabama Showed One New Strength Nate Oats Has Been Demanding
Nate Oats spent the offseason stressing a point Alabama could not ignore after its 2025-26 NCAA Tournament loss: the Crimson Tide had to get better on the glass. In the 2026-27 season opener against Arkansas State, that message showed up in a big way, as Alabama piled up 25 offensive rebounds, the most in the Oats era, and turned those extra possessions into a 101-86 win.
Even with the shot not falling the way Alabama would have liked, the rebounding edge gave the Tide a cushion and a clear early sign of progress in an area Oats has been pushing for months. It was also notable because Alabama did it without its best offensive rebounder, Jaxon Richardson, which only adds another layer to what the team may be capable of once that part of the rotation is fully in place. Keelon Russell Faces A Huge Alabama Weekend With More Than Heisman Stakes
A packed college football weekend is putting several of the sports biggest names under the microscope, and Alabama fans have a particular reason to keep one eye on the Heisman race and another on the schedule. Keelon Russell is among the quarterbacks whose performance could ripple beyond the standings, with his game carrying weight not just for Alabamas playoff hopes but also for the way the sports hottest players are being tracked in the card market.
The broader slate features other Heisman hopefuls such as Jeremiah Smith, Kenny Minchey, Sam Leavitt, Trinidad Chambliss, Gunner Stockton, Devon Dampier and Bear Bachmeier, turning the weekend into a referendum on momentum as much as talent. For collectors, the stakes are tied to more than wins and losses, since player performances can move card values quickly, and the mix of licensed and unlicensed cards adds another layer to how these names are being chased.
