Nate Oats Is Chasing One More SEC Recruiting Win Over Rivals

Nate Oats is setting the stage for Alabama's potential recruiting coup with a major announcement looming this Sunday.

Nate Oats may be closing in on another major addition for Alabama’s 2027 class.

After landing 5-star power forward Zion Green last weekend, the Crimson Tide are in position to add another blue-chip name in the coming days. Four-star center Yohane Kabongo, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound prospect from Daytona Beach by way of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is set to announce his college decision on Sunday. Alabama is in the final three with Mississippi State and Tennessee.

Kabongo took his official visit to Tuscaloosa on October 23rd. He also made official trips to Starkville and Knoxville, setting up a tight SEC battle that will come down to the wire.

The timing matters for Alabama. Green’s commitment on Saturday, alongside 5-star combo guard Chase Lumpkin, pushed the Crimson Tide’s 2027 class into the Top 10 of the recruiting rankings. If Alabama adds a third Top 100 player, that group would likely climb into the Top 5.

Kabongo brings a different kind of frontcourt profile. He’s not especially tall for a true center, but his 7-foot-2-plus wingspan and explosive bounce give him the kind of tools that stand out immediately. He looks built for Alabama’s dunker spot and could add energy and athleticism inside if Oats and Preston Murphy finish the job.

There’s also a roster angle here. Kabongo may be the last major target for the Tide’s 2027 class, and the fit makes sense with the current big-man picture.

Collins Onyejiaka is in his second year in the program and not part of the rotation, while true freshman TJ St. Louis appears to have already moved ahead of him in the pecking order.

Neither is expected to play many minutes this season.

Oats has clearly leaned toward bigger men who are more athletic, longer and quicker. That’s part of why Brandon Garrison and Jamarion Davis-Fleming were brought in through the transfer portal this offseason. Alabama’s drop coverage, once a staple under Oats with Charles Bediako anchoring it, hasn’t worked the same way anymore.

The Crimson Tide have also shifted to a defense that asks more of its bigs in terms of switchability, and Kabongo looks like he could handle that comfortably.

There isn’t a ton of public intel on where things stand, but Alabama appears to be in a strong spot entering Sunday. As with any recruiting race, that can change fast. Still, if Oats lands Kabongo to go with Lumpkin and Green, it would be another elite class for Alabama.

Lane Kiffins Alabama Problem Just Got Bigger In The Playoff

Lane Kiffins history against Alabama has become part of the backdrop every time he lines up across from the Crimson Tide, and it is impossible to ignore again with LSU set for a playoff matchup against No. 5 Alabama. As a head coach, Kiffin is 0-5 against Alabama, a run that has followed him through stops at different programs and kept this rivalry from ever feeling routine when his name is on the opposite sideline.

Now the stakes are even higher, with No. 14 LSU entering as the favorite and the result carrying real weight for both Kiffin and Alabamas coaching staff. For Kiffin, it is another chance to change a storyline that has followed him for years. Saban Sees One Alabama Problem That Could Decide LSU Trip

Nick Saban knows exactly what tends to decide trips to Baton Rouge, and he pointed to the same place Alabama has been vulnerable lately: the quarterback position. As the Crimson Tide get ready for LSU, Saban focused on Keelon Russells recent issues with turnovers and sacks, while also noting that Alabamas outlook improves with the return of key injured players and a steadier overall lineup.

The challenge now is less about talent than about how Alabama handles the noise and pressure inside Tiger Stadium. Saban stressed the need for mental toughness, maturity and consistency against an LSU defense that can make every mistake feel bigger, and the Tide will have to resist the kind of risky plays that can quickly tilt a road game in the wrong direction. Lane Kiffin Is Already Stirring Drama Before Alabama's LSU Test

Lane Kiffin is already adding a little edge to Alabamas trip to Baton Rouge, and not just because LSU is waiting on the other sideline. With the Crimson Tide and Tigers set for a late-afternoon kickoff, Kiffin suggested the SEC put the game in daylight to blunt the usual punch of Tiger Stadium, where LSU tends to feed off its night-game atmosphere.

He also made clear the size of the challenge Alabama presents, calling the Crimson Tide the most talented team LSU has seen this season. So even before the first snap, the stage is set for a test that carries the usual SEC weight and a little extra noise, with kickoff slated for 12:30 p.m. PT/3:30 p.m. ET. [Read more 🡒]
