Leonard Fournette isn’t shy about how he sees the 2015 Heisman race.
The former LSU star said on the “Downs 2 Business” podcast that he believed he should have taken home the trophy instead of Derrick Henry, and he went a step further by saying he would have been a multiple-time winner if he had played at Alabama for Nick Saban.
“He was a great coach,” Fournette said. “I think I probably would’ve been a 2-time Heisman Trophy winner if I would’ve went there.”
Josh Downs pressed Fournette on whether he felt he was robbed when Henry won the award during the 2015-2016 season, and Fournette didn’t back off.
“For sure,” Fournette responded. “He finished with 2,000 yards, right?
He played 15 games, though. I finished with 1,953 with 12 games, 24 touchdowns.
Back in those times, it was all the success went through your team though. Like, you know how they do now?
They give it to like the individual player, like Travis Hunter got it, Lamar Jackson got it. If you winning, you undefeated, you gonna get it.
But in my eyes, it goes to the best player. I was the best player in college football.”
Henry won the Heisman after a record-setting season in which he ran for 1,986 yards, breaking the SEC single-season rushing mark against Florida in the SEC Championship game, Alabama’s 13th game of the year. He also scored 23 rushing touchdowns during the regular season.
Fournette finished the regular season with 1,953 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns in 12 games.
