Labaron Philon Jr. and Johni Broome spent the last couple of seasons on opposite sides of one of college basketball’s biggest rivalries. Now they’re sharing a locker room with the Philadelphia 76ers, and the early chemistry is already showing up on the Summer League floor.
Broome has been with Philadelphia since being selected 35th overall last year, while Philon joined the organization in June as the 22nd overall pick. In Philon’s NBA Summer League debut, the two former Alabama and Auburn standouts helped power a 101-93 win over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday, July 9. Philon scored 18 points and handed out a team-high seven assists, while Broome added 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The moment that followed after the game made the pairing even more entertaining. Philon, who has already started generating viral moments since turning pro, worked his way into Broome’s media scrum and played the role of reporter.
Philon raised a taped-up hand and asked, "Mr. Broome, I've got a question."
He then set up the play in detail: "Coming off the screen, number double zero dimed you up, like you dunked on two people right there. Like, when you was rolling, what did you see?
The pass? You seen the rim?
You seen two guys? What did you see on that play?"
Broome answered in kind, matching the joke with a straight-faced response: "I kind of felt like that was a great pass, you know, great setup. I catch the ball, I see two people that wasn't on my team, and I just start thinking, 'Bodies, bodies, bodies,'"
The Broome-Philon show gets another run on Saturday, July 11, when the 76ers face the Indiana Pacers at 4:30 p.m. CT on Prime Video in NBA Summer League.
