Keelon Russell’s rise has gone from promising to impossible to ignore.
After a rocky opening against Kentucky, the Alabama sophomore has caught fire, and the Heisman Trophy conversation has started to bend his way. Russell was turnover-prone in the first half in Lexington, giving the ball away three times in the opening 30 minutes. Since then, though, he’s cleaned everything up, gone 10 quarters without a turnover, and helped Alabama stack up a pair of huge wins.
The first surge came against Florida State. Russell threw for 320 yards, ran for 56 more and accounted for four total touchdowns in Alabama’s 50-36 win.
His best stretch came late in the second quarter, when he ripped off three touchdown passes in three minutes to flip a 21-6 deficit into a 26-21 lead. He also delivered a 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that helped Alabama stretch the game out.
Then came Saturday’s performance against South Carolina, and that one looked like Russell at full throttle. On Alabama’s fourth offensive snap, he dropped a 75-yard touchdown strike to Lotzeir Brooks.
It was an absolute dime. Russell added three more first-half touchdowns and then scored again on the ground in the second half as the Crimson Tide rolled to a 49-18 win.
He finished with 400 total yards and five total touchdowns.
That run has sent his Heisman odds soaring. Russell now sits tied for fifth-best at +1200 on FanDuel, matching Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr. He’s just behind Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss at +1100, though Chambliss had been the favorite entering the weekend before Ole Miss was blown out by 24 on the road at Florida.
At the top of the board, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is the new favorite at +300, with Miami quarterback Darian Mensah close behind at +350.
Russell’s next test is a big one. Alabama heads to Starkville to face Mississippi State, and Bulldogs quarterback Kamario Taylor has the third-best Heisman odds at +800. That sets up a high-profile showdown between two of the sport’s brightest young quarterbacks, with the winner likely to climb even higher in the race.
Saturday in Starkville will be the biggest game for the young QB to date. If Russell can beat Taylor and lead Alabama to a road win over the No. 16 team in the country, the buzz around him is only going to get louder.
Through the season’s first stretch, Russell has thrown for 1,129 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s also added 168 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. His 89.0 QBR ranks seventh in the country.
And the wild part is that he still looks like he’s only getting started. Alabama’s offense is full of youth, and as that group keeps growing together, it’s only going to get tougher to deal with.

Alabama Heads Into Mississippi State With New Depth Concerns
Alabamas injury picture is starting to crowd the conversation heading into its trip to Mississippi State, with two more players added to a list the Crimson Tide has had to manage carefully. Will Sanders and Jayvin James both came out of the South Carolina game hurt, and while Sanders is expected to be available, James is now sitting in the questionable bucket as the Tide tries to sort out who will be ready to go.
The bigger concern may be the ripple effect on the middle of the defense. Linebackers Justin Hill and Desmond Umeozulu are already out, which leaves Alabama thinner than it would like at a spot that can be tested quickly in conference play. Alabama Heads Into Mississippi State With One Lingering Injury Concern
Alabama is getting closer to its trip to Mississippi State with a clearer picture of the injury situation along both lines, though not every answer is in yet. Kalen DeBoer said offensive lineman Jayvin James is questionable, while William Sanders is expected to be ready, which at least gives the Tide some needed depth as they head into another SEC road test.
