Shane Beamer sees Keelon Russell as a little bit of Jalen Milroe and a little bit of Ty Simpson, and that blend is exactly what has made Alabama’s freshman quarterback such a difficult assignment.
Asked during his weekly press conference Tuesday to compare Russell with the two recent Crimson Tide starters, the South Carolina coach pointed to Simpson’s throwing ability first. Beamer said he watched Simpson last year and thought, "Holy smokes, the throws he makes." He said Russell shows that same kind of polish, citing the freshman’s sideline strike against Florida State as the sort of throw that jumps off the tape.
"Then you see his athleticism and his ability to run, and it reminds you of Milroe," Beamer said. "He's got a play where they miss a sack and he gets out of the pocket the other day and it turns into a whatever long touchdown run.
So, I see a little bit of both. He's a heck of a player.
I can see why he was so highly recruited and to be doing that at a high level for (Alabama) already is really impressive as a freshman."
Beamer doubled down on that theme Wednesday during the SEC coaches’ teleconference, calling Russell’s ability to create off-script a "major point of emphasis" for South Carolina this week. He said Alabama’s first-year starter has already shown a knack for escaping what looks like a finished play and turning it into something explosive.
"You can turn on the tape, and there's plays on tape in these first three games where the defense probably feels like they've got him corralled and bottled up. And the next thing you know, it turns into an explosive run," Beamer said.
"So, it's been a point of emphasis this week in his ability to create and make things happen with his feet while also keeping his eyes downfield to throw the ball to some really talented receivers downfield. So, it's a challenge.
We faced a really, really, really good quarterback last week in Mississippi State. But this week is different just because of the ability in the open field that's a little bit different (from) what we faced last week."
That assessment lines up with how Alabama’s own people have talked about Russell since August. 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins said the Crimson Tide were getting something close to a Milroe-type runner who could also stress defenses with higher-end passing.
"I think for the Crimson Tide, you think about Jalen Milroe and his ability to extend plays with his legs. Now take Jalen Milroe and get a guy who can make a lot of high level throws. I think if you're an Alabama fan, I think you should be really excited."
Russell is coming off his best game in an Alabama uniform, a 23-of-30 performance for 320 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Florida State. He also added a 57-yard rushing score and, just as important, avoided turnovers. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said after the game that Russell has taken steady steps forward, especially in how he handles the operation and how he sees the field.
"I think every game there is something that he is doing a better job with," DeBoer said. "Week one to week two, it's the operation even before we snap the football.
As we are lining up in the huddle. I think last week as the game went on, he got more comfortable.
I thought he came out and was, in the passing game, accurate. Seeing the field, making a couple subtle checks.
Things like that. We want to let the game come to him.
But we have to pick and choose our times to be aggressive too and I think he is balancing that better and better from probably the second half last week through this game."
Alabama will host South Carolina in Bryant-Denny Stadium at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept.
