Kalen DeBoer didn’t hide the challenge Alabama was facing at halftime against Tennessee: the Crimson Tide had to clean up the offense and keep trusting the defense.
No. 14 Tennessee went to the break with a 12-10 lead over No.
6 Alabama on Rocky Top, and all 12 of the Volunteers’ points came from four field goals by kicker Cooper Ranvier. Alabama’s defense has done enough to keep Tennessee out of the end zone, but the Tide offense has spent the first half fighting itself.
Before heading into the locker room, DeBoer spoke to the Crimson Tide Sports Network, and Mike Rodak of 247Sports shared his comments.
Kalen DeBoer at halftime to @UA_CTSN on offense: "Just staying within yourself, not trying to do too much. It starts with Keelon and just helping us stay ahead of the chains, making good decisions.
The turnovers definitely hurt us, but we got them back. We know it’s gonna be a four-quarter game, and that’s what this is going to be about.
We got to continue to be physical and be great in the big moments. "Offensively, we know against the front that they have, it’s a slugfest.
You just got to keep playing."
Keelon Russell has been at the center of Alabama’s first-half problems. He has accounted for two of the Tide’s three turnovers, and he’s 6-of-12 passing for 40 yards with an interception. He also has Alabama’s only touchdown, a rushing score.
Even with the mistakes on offense, Alabama’s defense has kept the game within reach. Tennessee has outgained the Tide 163-95 in total offense, but the Vols have had to settle for field goals every time they’ve threatened.
DeBoer also addressed that side of the ball before the teams came back out.
DeBoer on defense: "That’s what we have to do when we’re in those spots: keep putting pressure on them as a defense. Make them earn it, make them snap the ball again.
Sooner or later, like we saw, the ball will end up in our lap. Keep making those plays."

Nick Saban Backed Alabama But His GameDay Warning Stood Out
ESPNs College GameDay spent part of its pregame spotlight laying out the weekend board, with Pat McAfee, Steve Young, Nick Saban, Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit each making their official picks and weighing the strengths and concerns around several marquee matchups. The discussion ranged from BYU over Notre Dame, a choice McAfee and Young both backed, to the SEC showcase in Knoxville, where Alabama was the preferred pick for most of the panel.
Saban did stick with the Crimson Tide in that one, but his commentary carried a different kind of edge than a simple pick sheet endorsement. As the crew worked through the game, the former Alabama coachs warning about what could decide the outcome stood out, a reminder that even when he believes in his old team, he is still quick to point out the sort of challenge that can turn a big Saturday into a stressful one. Nick Saban Sees One Real Threat In Alabama's Trip To Neyland
The build-up to Alabamas trip to Neyland Stadium has plenty of familiar edge, but Nick Saban pointed to one area that could matter most when the No. 6 Crimson Tide meet No. 16 Tennessee in Week 7. On College GameDay, the former Alabama coach broke down the Volunteers defensive strengths and highlighted a unit that can limit scoring, defend the pass and get after the quarterback, all traits that can disrupt an offenses rhythm in a hurry.
For Alabama, that means the usual SEC road-game questions are suddenly about more than noise and history. If Tennessee can force the Tide into longer drives and tougher third-down situations, the game could turn into a far tighter battle over possessions than rankings suggest, with the Volunteer defense shaping the kind of afternoon Alabama gets at one of the conferences most demanding venues. Alabama Heads To Tennessee With A New Problem Up Front
Alabama heads into Saturdays matchup at Tennessee with a wrinkle it did not need in the middle of the line. Center Racin Delgatty was downgraded to out on the SEC injury report after hurting his knee in the previous game, and the Tide are expected to turn to sophomore Mal Waldrep Jr. to handle the snap duties in a tough road spot.
The injury report leaves Alabama shuffling more than just one spot, too. Wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is also out, while tight end Josh Ford is listed as questionable, adding another layer of uncertainty to how the offense will look as it tries to navigate a difficult SEC test without a key piece up front.
