Georgia Still Has One Ranking Problem Heading Into Alabama

Danny Kanell's latest college football rankings shake up the standings, with Alabama leaping to the top spot after a commanding Week 5 performance.

Danny Kanell’s Week 5 top 12 got a fresh No. 1, and Alabama is the team sitting there after a weekend that shook up the upper end of the rankings.

Kanell posted his updated list early Sunday morning after a Week 5 slate that started with intrigue and then turned into a parade of blowouts in the biggest games. The result was a cleaner picture for him than last week, when his rankings featured six SEC teams. This time, only four SEC programs made the cut: Alabama, Texas, Georgia and Ole Miss.

Alabama jumped from No. 2 to No. 1 after its 56-23 rout of Mississippi State. Kanell had the Bulldogs at No. 3 entering the week, and the Crimson Tide made that look way too high. Keelon Russell put together a dominant performance, strengthening his case as a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, while Kane Wommack’s defense forced four turnovers in a win that kept Alabama’s early-season momentum rolling.

Georgia landed at No. 5 after a 38-14 win over Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs were not quite as overwhelming as they were in September, but the margin was still plenty comfortable. Gunner Stockton completed 25 of 32 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

Texas, which sits at No. 2, and Ole Miss, ranked No. 12, were both idle in Week 5. Looking ahead, Alabama and Georgia are set to meet in Week 6 for early conference supremacy.

Alabama May Have A New Wrinkle Georgia Can't Ignore

Alabamas offense showed a different look in its 56-23 win over Mississippi State, and it was enough to spark some real curiosity about where Ryan Grubb may want to take things next. The Crimson Tide used the I formation in the game, a wrinkle that stood out because it put more emphasis on running the ball from under center and gave the attack a more physical edge than usual.

Grubb addressed the approach in Mondays press conference and pointed to the offensive line and tight ends for the way they handled the assignment, even with a fumble on the first play out of the formation. He also said the staff could lean on it more in the 2026 season, which makes the look worth tracking now as Alabama keeps shaping answers that could matter later in the year and beyond. Alabamas Backfield Debate Is Getting Harder To Ignore

Alabamas backfield has become one of the more interesting depth-chart conversations around the program, and freshman EJ Crowell is right in the middle of it. Through his first stretch of work, he has piled up 204 yards and three touchdowns on just 26 carries, flashing the kind of efficiency that tends to make fans notice, especially when a young back is turning limited touches into steady production.

Even with that kind of return, Crowell has not been getting a heavy workload lately, which has only sharpened the debate about how the Crimson Tide should divide carries. Alabama has other backs involved too, with Daniel Hill and Trae'shawn Brown also factoring in, but the question now is whether Crowell has done enough to earn a bigger role as the season moves along. Ryan Grubb Sees One Alabama Concern Georgia Could Punish

Alabama rolled past Mississippi State 56-23, but Ryan Grubb still had a few reminders tucked inside the postgame evaluation. The Crimson Tide offensive coordinator pointed to early miscues, sharper decision making and a better job of avoiding sacks as areas that still need cleaning up, even after an outing that was mostly comfortable from start to finish.

One of the few blemishes was a rare, uncharacteristic fumble by Daniel Hill, though Grubb also had reason to like what he saw from the ground game. Alabama finished without a negative run for the first time since Grubb arrived, a sign the offensive front is settling in as the Tide turns its attention to a much steeper test. No. 2 Georgia is next, and the kind of drive-killing mistakes Alabama could get away with last week are the sort the Bulldogs are equipped to punish. [Read more 🡒]
