Georgia's Alabama Win Just Got More Complicated For Kirby Smart

With Georgia's victory over Alabama marred by a growing list of injuries, including the loss of key running back Chauncey Bowens, Kirby Smart faces a challenging path to maintaining the Bulldogs' top ranking.

Kirby Smart left Tuscaloosa with a win, but Georgia’s injury picture keeps getting uglier.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 20-17 victory over Alabama in Week 6 of the 2026 college football season, staying unbeaten and moving to No. 1 in the country. It was the kind of road win that usually sends a team into the next week riding high. Instead, Smart sounded like a coach staring at a roster that keeps shrinking.

“We’re a beat-up football team right now, guys,” Smart said after the win, according to Thomas Goldkamp of On3. “We’ve got guys out left and right.”

That message now feels even more pointed. Junior running back Chauncey Bowens is not expected to play in Week 7 against Auburn, and there is no timetable for his return after he suffered a lower-body injury against Vanderbilt on Oct. 3.

Bowens has been one of Georgia’s most important short-yardage pieces, especially around the goal line. He has 35 carries for 124 yards this season, a 3.5-yard average, but the scoring production has made him stand out.

He has six rushing touchdowns, including three against Arkansas and two against Oklahoma. Before the injury, he had found the end zone in three straight games.

He has also added 10 catches for 132 yards and a touchdown.

The timing could hardly be worse for Georgia, with Auburn next and Florida, No. 9 Ole Miss and No.

13 Missouri coming up in the next month. The Bulldogs may be forced to keep pushing through that stretch without Bowens.

Georgia does have options, but the running back room is clearly taking hits. Junior backs Dwight Phillips Jr. and Nate Frazier are still there, though Frazier was out against Alabama because of a rib injury. The Bulldogs have leaned on a running back by committee approach all season, and that setup looks likely to continue.

Phillips has run for 280 yards and a touchdown. Frazier has 211 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore Bo Walker has also chipped in with 30 carries for 203 yards and no scores.

SEC Response To Alabamas Georgia Frustration Wont Ease Many Fans

The aftermath of Alabamas loss to Georgia has kept the focus on more than just the scoreboard, with plenty of frustration aimed at several officiating decisions that drew heavy attention in the moment and even more after the game. Among the disputed calls was a no-call on a potential pass interference, one of several sequences that left Alabama fans searching for answers after a game already loaded with stakes and tension.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey addressed the broader issue by saying the conference does not comment on judgment calls made by officials, while also noting how difficult the job is and how the league reviews mistakes tied to rule application. For Alabama supporters, though, that explanation is unlikely to calm much of the anger, especially when the biggest flashpoints from the game are still the ones everyone keeps replaying. Alabamas Tennessee Test Could Come Down To A Few Unexpected Names

As Alabama turns toward Tennessee, the focus is not just on the usual stars but on a few names that may need to matter more than planned. Noah Rogers, Mal Waldrep, London Simmons and Carmelo O'Neal are all in position to have their roles stretched by injuries and shifting team needs, which can force a staff to lean on depth in a hurry. In a game like this, those kinds of midweek adjustments can shape everything from the opening rotation to the way Alabama tries to manage the line of scrimmage and the back end.

The challenge is that Tennessee does not offer a gentle place to introduce unfamiliar pieces. Any increased workload for Rogers, Waldrep, Simmons or O'Neal would come in a difficult environment, where execution tends to matter as much as experience. Alabama does not need every backup to become a headline, but it may need one or two of these players to settle the game in ways that are not always obvious until the matchup starts to unfold. Alabama May Have To Reshuffle Key Spots Before Tennessee

Alabamas first SEC availability report for Saturdays trip to Tennessee brought the sort of injury news that can complicate a game plan fast, with several players already tagged as out, questionable or probable. Among the notable absences are Ryan Coleman-Williams, who is dealing with knee and head injuries, and Terrance Green, who is out with a lower-leg injury, leaving Kalen DeBoer and his staff to sort through the ripple effects before one of the seasons biggest road tests.

DeBoer has already addressed player conditions and the possibility of moving others into bigger roles if the Tide need to patch together key spots. With availability still in flux ahead of kickoff, Alabamas challenge is not just preparing for Tennessee, but making sure the lineup can absorb the losses without losing too much rhythm on either side of the ball.
