Gary “Legend” Wilson’s run at SEC Media Days came to an abrupt end Tuesday, with the longtime Paul Finebaum Show caller reportedly ejected from the main floor in Tampa.
According to AL.com, Wilson was removed by SEC staff and hired security after being told by SEC director of communications Craig Pinkerton that “he needed to leave the floor,” according to the AL.com report.
Wilson, who also hosts a Saturday morning show on WJOX in Birmingham, Ala., had been around the event without a credential. Even so, he was seated on the second floor of the Tampa Marriott, where SEC Media Days is being held from Monday through Thursday. AL.com reported that Wilson had been seen conducting interviews in that area of the hotel on Monday and again early Tuesday.
The issue escalated late Tuesday morning. After Wilson objected to the SEC’s decision, Pinkerton reportedly had security escort him off the floor. Wilson was still allowed to remain in the hotel lobby.
“There were like 30 people out there without credentials,” Wilson told AL.com later on Tuesday. “He just came and singled me out and started yelling in my face.”
AL.com also reported that Pinkerton had no comment on the matter. The outlet said its staff witnessed part of the confrontation and that Pinkerton did not raise his voice “in any notable way” at Legend.
Wilson is best known to college football fans as a diehard Alabama supporter whose long rants have made him one of the most recognizable voices on Finebaum’s show.
