Bryce Young Is Forcing A Bigger NFL Conversation Again

Bryce Young's Sunday night heroics against the Lions has ignited serious MVP discussions, showcasing his leadership and skill under pressure.

Bryce Young kept his name right in the middle of the MVP conversation on Sunday night.

Under the lights on Sunday Night Football, the former Alabama quarterback led the Carolina Panthers to a 32-26 win over the Detroit Lions, turning in the kind of performance that demands attention. Young carved up Detroit’s secondary with steady precision, and he did it while missing two of his top targets, Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette, both sidelined by injury.

That didn’t slow him down. Young leaned on Tetairoa McMillan and got a strong lift from former Tide teammate John Metchie as Carolina improved to 2-2.

By the time the night was over, Young had gone 29-of-41 for 329 yards and two touchdowns. He also opened the game by completing his first 11 passes, setting the tone for an evening in which he looked in complete command.

One throw in particular captured the night’s energy:

The numbers through four weeks are impossible to ignore. Young now leads the NFL with 1,268 passing yards.

He’s tied for third with nine touchdown passes and ranks fifth in QBR at 74.6. And he’s doing it behind an offense that’s been battered by injuries, with Carolina also dealing with multiple offensive line issues on top of the missing receivers.

That means Young has had to keep making plays in the pocket, often while pressure is closing in. Alabama fans know that version of him well. The same calm, slippery quarterback who made defenders miss in college has shown up in the NFL, and he’s been forced to use every bit of that skill set.

The season totals tell the story clearly:

Bryce Young this season:

1,268 pass yards (1st)

9 pass TD (T-3rd)

63 pass 1st downs (1st)

55 comp of 10+ yds (1st)

13 comp of 25+ yds (1st)

Per @NextGenStats:

411 pass yds under pressure (1st)

4 pass TD under pressure (T-1st)

321 deep pass yds (1st)

7 pass TD outside numbers…

The way Young is playing, it’s fair to say he looks like one of the league’s top quarterbacks right now. The Panthers will have to keep stacking wins if he’s going to have a real shot at the MVP award, but the primetime stage certainly helped his case.

That matters because MVP voters don’t usually hand the trophy to a quarterback on a non-playoff team. No NFL MVP has come from a non-playoff team since OJ Simpson won it in 1973 with the Buffalo Bills.

Still, the performance in front of a national audience should push Young’s stock higher. If you ask his teammates, they’ve already seen enough to decide where he belongs.

And whatever label followed him early in his career, Young continues to erase it. The idea that he was a bust after just 13 career starts never held up, and nights like this make that even harder to argue.

Kirby Smart Just Validated Alabamas Identity Ahead Of Georgia

Alabama has spent the season leaning into a physical identity, and that reputation is starting to travel well beyond Tuscaloosa. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has repeatedly pointed to the strength of the defensive line and the groups effort as core traits for this team, a profile built as much on strain and toughness as it is on talent. That kind of image matters in a league where line play and grit usually decide whether a contender can hold up when the schedule gets heavy.

Kirby Smart reinforced that view this week ahead of Georgias meeting with Alabama, acknowledging the Crimson Tides size and physicality while also nodding to the way the roster has been built through recruiting and the transfer portal. Smart also singled out quarterback Keelon Russell for the progress he has made, a notable compliment considering how closely these teams will be studying every edge. For Alabama, the recognition is useful, but it also serves as a reminder that its identity is now clear enough for a rival to see and respect. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama Defense Keeps Giving Kane Wommack A Reason To Pay Up

Kane Wommack has built a small but telling tradition around Alabamas defense, rewarding the staff with a Sunday-night dinner whenever the unit finds the end zone or posts a shutout. It is a lighthearted perk, but it also speaks to how much the coordinator values the people around him and the work that goes into producing those kinds of game-changing moments.

The latest tab came after cornerback Dijon Lee turned an interception into a touchdown against Mississippi State, another reminder that Alabamas defense has been creating reasons for Wommack to keep reaching for the check. Wommack said he appreciates the staffs hard work and the chance to sit down together, which makes the gesture feel less like a gimmick and more like part of the programs rhythm. [Read more 🡒]

Alabama-Tennessee Just Got A Twist Fans Will Be Talking About

Alabamas next trip to Knoxville is already on the calendar, and the details around the 2026 matchup with Tennessee give the Third Saturday in October some added shape. The Tide are set to visit Neyland Stadium on Oct. 17, 2026, with a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff and television information to be announced later, while the broader backdrop is the long-running history between the programs and the recent pattern of how their meetings have been handled.

What makes the scheduling note even more interesting is the jersey arrangement attached to the 2026 and 2027 games, a wrinkle fans will have plenty of time to circle. For now, though, Alabamas attention is on the present, with Georgia coming to Tuscaloosa for a home game that is expected to draw plenty of notable attendees, even as the future date with Tennessee starts to come into focus.
