Austin Mack didn’t win Alabama’s quarterback job, but the way he’s handled the setback says plenty about who he is.
Keelon Russell was officially named the starter last Saturday, leaving Mack in line for his fourth straight season as a backup. That kind of news can send a player into the shadows.
Mack has done the opposite. According to Kalen DeBoer, he was one of the first players in the facility on Sunday, just 24 hours after learning the decision.
That has been the story with Mack since the announcement: disappointment privately, professionalism publicly. His preparation hasn’t changed.

That kind of gesture matters because it shows Mack is still operating as an ambassador for the program, even after realizing his path to the starting job in Tuscaloosa is likely closed off. With Russell a true sophomore, he’s positioned to hold the job for at least the next two seasons barring something unexpected. If Mack wants a chance to start, the Transfer Portal will almost certainly be the next stop after the season.
For Alabama, though, Mack’s response has real value right now. The Crimson Tide have plenty of quarterback talent on the way, with four committed prospects across the 2027 and 2028 classes and two quarterbacks already signed in the 2026 class. Anyone entering that room is going to understand the wait that comes with it.
Mack is helping set that tone. A year after Ty Simpson finally got his shot and turned one strong season into being the No. 13 pick in the NFL Draft, Mack is showing the next wave what it looks like to stay ready, stay engaged and keep leading even when the job goes to someone else.
