Kentucky has put itself in the mix for one of the most intriguing names in the 2027 class, as elite wing AJ Williams trimmed his list to 10 schools: Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Arkansas, BYU, Auburn, Duke and Illinois.
The Wildcats got in early, offering Williams on Sept. 1 and earning a spot among his finalists soon after. That timing matters because Williams is the kind of prospect who doesn’t stay hidden for long. He’s a 6-foot-7 wing who reclassified into the 2027 class, and the national rankings back up the buzz: ESPN and 247Sports have him at No. 5 overall, while Rivals slots him at No. 4, according to A Sea of Blue.
What makes Williams so valuable is the full package. In his most recent high school season, he put up 31.8 points and 12.7 rebounds per game.
On the EYBL circuit, he averaged 19.3 points and 7.9 assists. That’s not a typical wing stat line, and it’s part of why he stands out in such a loaded class.
He’s not just a scorer who can fill it up against high school competition. Williams has also shown he can create for others at a high level, and doing that against nationally ranked prospects makes the profile even more impressive. He backed that up on the international stage as well, helping the United States win gold at the FIBA Under-17 AmeriCup.
That kind of size-and-playmaking combination gives any college coach options. Williams can handle offense without forcing a team to rely on a traditional point guard for every possession, but he also has enough scoring punch to punish defenses that try to treat him like a pure passer.
Kentucky isn’t alone in this fight. Duke and North Carolina bring the blue-blood pull.
Auburn and Arkansas have been active and aggressive in the current recruiting landscape. BYU has emerged as a real player with the resources and development pitch to land elite talent.
Georgia and Georgia Tech also remain in the conversation, especially if proximity and familiarity end up carrying weight.
For Kentucky, the appeal is straightforward: Williams could be the kind of versatile wing who helps define a modern offense. He wouldn’t have to fit neatly into one role. He can initiate, attack mismatches, rebound and move around the lineup, giving the Wildcats a player they could build possessions around without making him a conventional point guard.
The next stage of the recruitment will be about visits and how quickly Williams wants to make a decision. For now, Kentucky has done what it needed to do early, landing on the list before the real cuts began.
If the Wildcats can close, they’d be adding one of the class’s most complete offensive talents and a player who could shape just about every possession he touches.
