Alabamas Tennessee Rotation Raised New Questions Fans Cant Ignore

Alabama's strategic adjustments against Tennessee reveal surprising playing time for freshmen amidst injuries and lineup changes.

For the first time this season, Alabama turned to a freshman at running back to open a game at Tennessee, with Trae'shawn Brown getting the start. But the snap count told a different story about how the night actually unfolded.

Brown played 16 snaps and finished with six carries for 12 yards. Daniel Hill wound up handling the biggest workload in the backfield, logging 33 snaps after starting the first six games of the season. He carried seven times for 34 yards.

EJ Crowell, Alabama’s other freshman back, barely got onto the field. He played just four snaps and had one carry for one yard on a play where he was upended by a Tennessee defender.

Crowell was later seen talking with medical staff and went to the locker room before halftime. He came back out in uniform for the second half, but he did not play again and returned to the locker room with a few minutes left.

Kalen DeBoer said Crowell had a lower-body injury, though he did not say how serious it was.

Alabama also entered the game without wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to address a meniscus injury, ESPN reported before kickoff. DeBoer had previously described Coleman-Williams as week-to-week.

That absence created some expectation that Noah Rogers would see more work. The NC State transfer had played just eight snaps since coming back from injury against South Carolina, and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said last Monday that Rogers was close to 100%.

Before the game, DeBoer told Crimson Tide Sports Network, "We're gonna need the wide receivers and guys like Noah Rogers more than likely getting more opportunities than he's had. This is about the week that you're really kind of striving for to ramp his numbers up.

Derek Meadows I can see getting more opportunities as well in relief of Ryan. Those guys getting some opportunities, for sure."

Instead, Rogers played only two snaps against Tennessee, matching freshman wide receiver Cederian Morgan. Derek Meadows was the one who saw real volume, playing 51 snaps and catching two passes for eight yards on three targets.

Alabama’s offensive counts from the Week 7 loss at Tennessee, as provided to CBS Sports:

QUARTERBACK: Keelon Russell (55) (did not play: Austin Mack, Jett Thomalla) (not in uniform: Tayden-Evan Kaawa, John Gazzaniga)

TIGHT END: Kaleb Edwards (29), Marshall Pritchett (23), Josh Ford (13), Danny Lewis (7), Jay Lindsey (6) (did not play: Mack Sutter) (not in uniform: Jack Sammarco)

Brandon Miller Just Reached A New Level For Alabama Basketball

Brandon Millers rise from Alabama standout to NBA centerpiece just hit another milestone, with the former Crimson Tide star set to enter his fourth season in Charlotte after a huge jump in stature with the Hornets. Drafted No. 2 overall in 2023, Miller has already established himself as one of the most prominent pro products in Alabama basketball history, and his production last season only strengthened that case as he finished north of 20 points per game.

Charlotte and Miller agreed to a contract extension before the start of the 2026-27 season, keeping the franchise tied to one of its youngest building blocks for the long haul. The deal also puts him in a unique spot in Alabama basketball lore, giving him the biggest NBA payday ever for a former Tide player and underscoring just how quickly his profile has climbed since leaving Tuscaloosa. Alabama Just Took Part In A Tennessee First Fans Will Hate

Tennessees crowd reached a level Neyland Stadium had never seen before in the Volunteers win over Alabama, with the atmosphere producing the highest scientifically verified crowd noise in college football history. The peak reading, 130.3 decibels, came late in the third quarter and was tied to a defensive play, adding another jolt to a place already known for being one of the sports most difficult road environments.

For Alabama, the kind of noise that usually gets remembered in rival territory just became part of the record book, and not in a way Tide fans will enjoy revisiting. The measurement topped the previous verified benchmark set at Penn State during Ohio States trip in 2007, giving Tennessee a new standard for home-field volume and a fresh bragging point in one of college footballs most heated matchups. Tennessee Just Made Alabama's Misery Impossible To Ignore

The Tennessee rivalry has turned into an uncomfortable marker for Alabama, and the latest trip to Knoxville only made that harder to ignore. After winning 15 straight meetings from 2007 through 2021, the Crimson Tide have now dropped three in a row there, a shift that says plenty about how much the balance has changed in a series that used to feel almost automatic on one side.

The frustration spilled over quickly after the loss, with fans taking to The Paul Finebaum Show to vent about the coaching staff and the teams performance. Callers like Legend and Handsome Joe reflected the mood around the program, turning the radio segment into a loud referendum on decisions, execution and pride, the kind of public backlash that tends to follow a loss when a rivalry has stopped feeling familiar.
