Alabama's Ryan Grubb Reveals Unique Edge in Quarterback Battle

Alabama's offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb breaks down the unique qualities of quarterbacks Austin Mack and Keelon Russell as the competition heats up for the 2026 starting position.

Alabama football's offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, offered some intriguing insights into the unique strengths of quarterbacks Austin Mack and Keelon Russell during his recent media session.

Every quarterback brings a distinct style to the gridiron. Some excel as dual-threat athletes, capable of making plays with both their arm and legs, while others are more traditional pocket passers who can still scramble when needed. Grubb sees Mack and Russell as fitting neatly into these categories.

“Obviously, Keelon is a really, really good athlete,” Grubb noted, highlighting Russell's standout athleticism. “His mobility is a significant asset.

We saw Austin's ability to run in the Rose Bowl, where he notched a scramble touchdown. While Austin can move, Keelon's athleticism brings something extra to the table.”

Grubb also praised both quarterbacks for their arm talent. “They’re both supremely talented in terms of pushing the ball downfield,” he said.

“There’s no throw in my playbook that I’d hesitate to call for either of them. They both have quick releases, and while they're working on accuracy, their skill sets are quite similar.

Aside from Keelon’s mobility, there’s not a huge difference between them other than size.”

As Mack and Russell continue their battle for the starting QB spot in Tuscaloosa for 2026, it's clear that Alabama has two promising talents ready to lead the charge.
