Alabamas Playoff Path Just Turned Into A Pressure Test

After a tough defeat to Tennessee, Coach DeBoer urges Alabama to face discomfort head-on and regroup for the challenging road ahead.

No. 6 Alabama walked out of Neyland Stadium with a loss and a much narrower path forward.

After a 26-10 defeat to No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday, the Crimson Tide has two losses and, as it stands, likely has to run the table to stay in the College Football Playoff conversation.

The offense never found its footing. Alabama mustered just 201 yards and finished with 10 points, with its lone touchdown coming on a short field after Ivan Taylor’s interception. That was the kind of day where every drive felt heavy, and the scoreboard kept getting less forgiving.

Kalen DeBoer didn’t sugarcoat what comes next. He told his players after the game that the coming stretch is “going to be really uncomfortable.”

“Everything I said to those guys, it’s not like I didn’t feel like they didn’t practice,” DeBoer said. “We had a lot of motivation to come back and have a great week and prepare for this game. But moving forward it’s going to be another level of uncomfortable.”

The task ahead is a brutal one. Alabama’s remaining slate includes Texas A&M, a ranked LSU team, Vanderbilt, Chattanooga and an Auburn team fresh off a road win over No.

1 Georgia. That’s the reality now: no room to coast, no room to blink.

“I know they feel it,” DeBoer said of his players. “Our older guys had mentioned that even a couple weeks ago, what it’s going to be like here on this stretch.

The key is you just hone in on one game. Don’t look at the big picture.

Hone in on one game. Believe you have a team that can get it done.

I felt like we actually at the end of the game, I thought just looking at the guys in their eyes and stuff, they were scrapping until the end. Going to keep playing.

That’s what this is going to be about moving forward. Continue to believe that we’re going to find a way.

You’ve got to pick up and come to work.”

Saturday’s loss didn’t happen in isolation, either. Alabama was one of multiple top-10 SEC teams to take a hit, with Georgia falling and No. 7 Texas losing to Florida as well.

“Everyone’s going through it,” DeBoer said. “Who’s going to respond and get it done?

We’ve been through this before and we’ve gotten it done. We’ve got to make sure we get it done here moving forward.

I told the guys, this is a team that can do it. This is a team that can do that.

You’ve got to catch breaks and you’ve got to stay healthy, but that’s everyone across the board.”

Kalen DeBoer Sent Alabama A Clear Message After Tennessee Loss

Kalen DeBoers message to Alabama after the 26-10 loss to Tennessee was simple enough, even if the reality is not: the season still has plenty in front of it, and the Crimson Tide need to reset quickly. He pushed his team to stay focused, lean into resilience and stop looking too far ahead, a reminder that the next stretch will be shaped less by frustration than by how well Alabama handles one game at a time.

The loss in Knoxville came with plenty of familiar pain points, from Tennessee back Sean Bishops 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns to Alabama quarterback Keelon Russells three turnovers and 147 passing yards. For DeBoer, the challenge now is less about explaining what went wrong than making sure the response is sharp, disciplined and immediate, because Alabama does not have much margin to let one defeat linger. Alabamas Offense Has Become The Biggest Debate After Another Loss

For Alabama, the bigger concern coming out of another loss is no longer just the result itself, but how the offense keeps reaching the same dead end. After back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2013, including the latest setback against Tennessee, the focus has shifted to Ryan Grubbs play-calling and an attack that has too often looked unable to adjust when the game demands it. Even with the defense holding up more consistently, the Crimson Tide could not turn that into enough on the other side of the ball.

Keelon Russells performance has only added to the conversation, because Alabama has not found enough rhythm or answers when the offense needs to settle in. The frustrating part for the Tide is that the defensive effort was there, but the unit that usually drives the conversation in Tuscaloosa could not capitalize on it. Until the offense starts matching the standard the program expects, every loss is going to feel like a referendum on how this group is being put together. [Read more 🡒]

Tennessee's Celebration Just Added Another Twist To This Alabama Rivalry

The latest chapter in the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry did not end with the final whistle. After Tennessee fans stormed the field following the Volunteers win over Alabama, the Southeastern Conference fined the school $500,000 for violating its access to competition area policy, turning a postgame celebration into a costly matter for the league office to sort through.

The money will go to Alabama, but the SEC policy leaves Tennessee with a path to seek a reduction if it can show it took steps to prevent the breach or that the contact was limited. The rule also allows schools to plan for field celebrations in advance, provided they submit procedures for approval, which adds another layer to a rivalry that already seems to find new ways to stay heated.
