Alabamas Playoff Margin Just Got A Lot Less Comfortable

After a tough loss to Tennessee, Alabama's playoff hopes are now on shaky ground according to ESPN's updated rankings.

Alabama’s loss to Tennessee didn’t just sting on the field. It also triggered a sharp turn in ESPN’s Football Power Index, which trimmed the Crimson Tide’s Playoff outlook in a hurry.

After Week 7, Alabama slid only one spot in the overall FPI ranking, from the previous No. 5-ish range to No. 6.

But the bigger hit came in the Playoff projection. Before the loss to the Vols, ESPN had Alabama at 82.4% to make the Playoff.

That number fell all the way to 49.4% after Saturday’s defeat.

The FPI now shows 17 teams with at least a 38% chance of reaching the Playoff field, and Alabama’s projection ranks eighth among them. Within the SEC, only Georgia sits higher at 78.1%.

Still, the numbers aren’t exactly a surprise to anyone watching the Crimson Tide’s path. Alabama now has two losses, and the road is simple but unforgiving: win the next five games.

Even then, getting in at 9-3 would require more chaos around the country. Other sports media outlets no longer have Alabama projected as a Playoff team.

ESPN’s model also gives Alabama just a 47.9% chance to beat LSU.

There is at least one small point of comfort for Alabama: it remains the highest-ranked two-loss team in the FPI. Texas is No. 7, LSU is No. 8, and Oregon sits at No. 10 among the two-loss group.

Elsewhere in the SEC, Week 7 shook up the rankings in a few places. Auburn was the biggest mover after its road win over Georgia, jumping 10 spots to No.

  1. Mississippi State took the biggest tumble, dropping 11 places to No. 38, while Missouri fell 10 spots to No.

Florida moved up six spots to No. 19 after knocking off Texas in Austin. Kentucky and Ole Miss each climbed four spots, landing at No. 26 and No. 11, respectively.

Tennessee’s win over Alabama only bumped the Vols up one spot to No. 12, while Georgia’s one-spot drop after the Auburn loss left the Bulldogs at No. 3.

Texas A&M also saw a modest bump. The Aggies’ win over The Citadel moved them up one spot to No. 20, and Alabama’s projected chances against them dipped from 86.8% to 83.5%. The Crimson Tide’s projected odds of winning the Iron Bowl also slid, falling from 89.2% to 82.8%.

Kalen DeBoer Sent Alabama A Clear Message After Tennessee Loss

Kalen DeBoers message to Alabama after the 26-10 loss to Tennessee was simple enough, even if the reality is not: the season still has plenty in front of it, and the Crimson Tide need to reset quickly. He pushed his team to stay focused, lean into resilience and stop looking too far ahead, a reminder that the next stretch will be shaped less by frustration than by how well Alabama handles one game at a time.

The loss in Knoxville came with plenty of familiar pain points, from Tennessee back Sean Bishops 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns to Alabama quarterback Keelon Russells three turnovers and 147 passing yards. For DeBoer, the challenge now is less about explaining what went wrong than making sure the response is sharp, disciplined and immediate, because Alabama does not have much margin to let one defeat linger. Alabamas Offense Has Become The Biggest Debate After Another Loss

For Alabama, the bigger concern coming out of another loss is no longer just the result itself, but how the offense keeps reaching the same dead end. After back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2013, including the latest setback against Tennessee, the focus has shifted to Ryan Grubbs play-calling and an attack that has too often looked unable to adjust when the game demands it. Even with the defense holding up more consistently, the Crimson Tide could not turn that into enough on the other side of the ball.

Keelon Russells performance has only added to the conversation, because Alabama has not found enough rhythm or answers when the offense needs to settle in. The frustrating part for the Tide is that the defensive effort was there, but the unit that usually drives the conversation in Tuscaloosa could not capitalize on it. Until the offense starts matching the standard the program expects, every loss is going to feel like a referendum on how this group is being put together. [Read more 🡒]

Tennessee's Celebration Just Added Another Twist To This Alabama Rivalry

The latest chapter in the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry did not end with the final whistle. After Tennessee fans stormed the field following the Volunteers win over Alabama, the Southeastern Conference fined the school $500,000 for violating its access to competition area policy, turning a postgame celebration into a costly matter for the league office to sort through.

The money will go to Alabama, but the SEC policy leaves Tennessee with a path to seek a reduction if it can show it took steps to prevent the breach or that the contact was limited. The rule also allows schools to plan for field celebrations in advance, provided they submit procedures for approval, which adds another layer to a rivalry that already seems to find new ways to stay heated.
