Alabama's Nate Oats Stuns Fans With Labaron Philon Update Before Tennessee Game

Coach Nate Oats shares cautious optimism about Labaron Philon's return as Alabama prepares to face Tennessee, highlighting lingering injury concerns and the need for team resilience.

Alabama basketball fans are keeping a close eye on guard Labaron Philon as the Crimson Tide gears up for a big matchup against Tennessee. After Alabama's decisive win over Mississippi State, where they didn't need Philon's firepower to sink a season-high 22 threes, the sophomore was given some rest. This strategic move aims to have him ready for the weekend clash in Knoxville.

Head coach Nate Oats shed some light on Philon's condition, explaining, "He's eager to get back on the court. We'll see if our athletic trainer, Clarke Holter, gives him the green light. He did manage to participate in parts of practice today."

While the official word on Philon's status is expected Friday evening in the SEC availability report, fans are hopeful. Previously, Philon was listed as questionable before the Mississippi State game and was ultimately ruled out just hours before tip-off. A similar situation occurred earlier in the month against Auburn, but he ended up starting against the Tigers.

This season has seen Philon dealing with several in-game "contusions" and a persistent thigh-groin issue. Oats emphasized the importance of other players stepping up, saying, "Wrightsell and Holloway need to continue their strong performances.

Even when Philon returns, he hasn't been at full strength. We’re working to get him healthy before Saturday and see how he performs."

The Crimson Tide, boasting a 21-7 record (11-4 in SEC play), is set to face Tennessee (20-8, 10-5) at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb.
