Alabama’s 2027 recruiting approach is pretty clear: don’t chase headlines, chase value. After stacking back-to-back elite classes in 2025 and 2026, the Crimson Tide are leaning harder on roster retention and the Transfer Portal right now, with the bigger spending spree saved for the 2028 cycle, where Alabama already sits No. 1 in the composite rankings.
That’s why the latest offer from Kalen DeBoer’s staff stands out. On Friday, 3-star ATH Isaiah Reed announced that Alabama had entered the picture, sharing the news on Twitter after what he described as a conversation with @PlayerProMorgan. Reed is listed as a running back on his 247 profile, but he’s more of a two-way player in high school, and most projections have him landing at linebacker in college. At 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, he’ll need to add size before he’s ready for that job full time.
Alabama, though, isn’t shopping for instant answers at linebacker next season. The Tide already have a strong group of young players there, and even if a player or two leaves through the portal, the room should still be in good shape.
The five-for-five rule also matters here, since it would allow Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson to return for a fifth year of eligibility if he wants it.
Reed committed to Texas State in June, but his recruitment is clearly moving. The Texas native also has offers from Houston and Baylor, and Alabama’s involvement figures to bring more attention his way nationally.
The bigger picture is that Alabama’s 2027 class is built a little differently than the monster hauls that came before it. Right now, the group sits 42nd in the composite rankings. The Tide have landed some top-end names, including quarterback Elijah Haven and wide receiver Osani Gayles, but they’ve also targeted players who were not heavily recruited and believe can outplay their ranking.
That list includes 3-stars RB Tai Phillips, CB Darrius White, WR Cedrick Simmons and EDGE Tyler Younger. So while this class may not be packed with obvious instant-impact recruits, Alabama is clearly betting on development - the kind that can pay off down the line in Tuscaloosa.
And if DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan have shown anything so far, it’s that they know how to spot talent before everyone else catches on. Reed could be the next example.
