Alabama's Kane Wommack Reveals Key to Transforming Defense by 2026

Alabama is focusing on boosting its pass rush and tackling strategies to achieve defensive dominance by 2026.

The Crimson Tide's defense showed promise in 2025, ranking 13th nationally in total defense. However, with 86 tackles for loss placing them 55th and 33 sacks ranking 54th, there's room for improvement. Defensive coordinator Wommack is keenly aware that the path to dominance starts at the line of scrimmage.

“We need to focus on creating negative plays,” Wommack emphasized. “Generating a consistent pass rush has been a challenge, especially early in the season.

Yhonzae Pierre's late-season surge off the edge was a bright spot, impacting the quarterback significantly. In two-minute drills, we need to execute a four-man rush effectively, reducing our reliance on man coverage and blitzes.

While our numbers have been solid over the past two years, consistent dominance has eluded us. We've shown glimpses, but the goal is to be more formidable up front.”

To bolster their defensive capabilities, Alabama has turned to the transfer portal, addressing key areas that needed reinforcement.

“We’ve brought in some promising talent through the transfer portal,” Wommack noted. “I’m excited about our new defensive linemen and the progress of our returning players. We’re finding innovative ways to disrupt the backfield more frequently.”

As spring football progresses, Alabama remains focused on enhancing their defensive prowess, aiming for a more dominant presence on the field.
