Alabama’s quarterback battle may still be open, but the first fall scrimmage looks like it settled a few other spots.
Kalen DeBoer wasn’t ready to hand out any public declarations after Thursday’s work, and that was true at quarterback, where the competition remains unresolved. Still, the broader picture from the scrimmage pointed toward a few answers elsewhere on the depth chart, especially along the offensive line and at linebacker.
Up front, Alabama appears to be trending toward a settled five. The Tide already had Jackson Lloyd locked in at left tackle, Racin Delgatty at center, and Michael Carroll at right guard. The real questions were at left guard and right tackle, and the early signs from camp have continued to point in the same direction.
Mal Waldrep worked first at left guard and Jayvin James opened at right tackle during the scrimmage, just as they have through much of fall camp. DeBoer’s comments afterward made it sound as if that pairing is gaining real traction.
“There’s been a lot of consistency with who’s in the rotation, especially with the ones, and that’s been important for our progress,” DeBoer said.
That consistency has been a theme all camp, and it fits with what Ryan Grubb already said about Alabama trying to identify the best five and leave them together. Will Sanders is still in the mix at left guard, while Texas transfer Nick Brooks will keep pushing James at right tackle, but the opener against East Carolina may feature the same group that has been working together most often.
The more notable shift may be at linebacker. Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson has been the steady answer at Mike since spring, but the Stinger spot next to him had been more open. Junior QB Reese had been viewed as the favorite there, yet the momentum seems to have swung.
Sophomore Luke Metz has been building a strong case throughout fall camp, and DeBoer backed that up after the scrimmage. When asked about the linebacker group, Metz was the first name he brought up.
“Luke Metz is a guy I’d make a note of,” DeBoer said. “The way he plays every snap as a young guy, he’s getting better and better, as you’d expect.
Reports from those who watched the scrimmage had Metz running with the first team at Stinger alongside Woodson, which is a strong sign with three weeks left before the opener. Reese still figures to have a role, and sophomore Abduall Sanders remains in the conversation too, but Metz looks like the player sitting closest to the top of the chart right now.
Alabama still has one more scrimmage coming next Thursday before turning fully toward Week 1, and the quarterback race will keep getting the attention. But after Thursday, the Tide seems to have found some clarity at left guard, right tackle and linebacker.

Alabamas first fall scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium offered an early look at where some of the rosters pieces may already be settling in under Kalen DeBoer. The head coach came away encouraged by several spots, with the defensive line working through a new look up front after the departures that opened the door for transfers Devan Thompkins and Terrance Green. Tight end is another area worth watching, and sophomore Kaleb Edwards is in position to take on the starting Y role. Alabamas Backfield Suddenly Has An Opening A Young RB Can Seize
Alabamas first fall camp scrimmage brought a little more uncertainty to the backfield than the staff probably wanted, even if the long-term outlook still appears manageable. Freshman running back EJ Crowell was held out with an injury, and while he may need to miss more practice time, it is not expected to affect his availability once the games begin.
The more immediate opening may belong to Trae'shawn Brown, the freshman who has drawn notice throughout spring and fall work for the way he has practiced and handled himself around the staff and teammates. With the backfield still sorting itself out and AK Dear also dealing with an ankle issue that will be evaluated further, Brown has a chance to keep pushing for a role if he can keep stacking productive days in camp.
