Kalen DeBoer has set the stage for an intriguing quarterback showdown at the University of Alabama, with Austin Mack and Keelon Russell locked in a two-man battle for the starting position.
During his first spring press conference, DeBoer shared insights into what he's observed from both quarterbacks. "You can see their growth from last year," he noted.
"They're playing with confidence, calling plays in the huddle with authority. They're light years ahead of where they were, as expected.
The talent is undeniable. Now it's about building rapport with their teammates, making the right throws, and feeling comfortable in the pocket.
That comfort comes with time and trust in their offensive line."
DeBoer also praised their ability to create explosive plays in practice, highlighting their mobility as a key aspect of their game. "They've been impressive through two practices, showing a good feel for the game and working their mobility when needed. That's a crucial part of football."
Last season, Mack and Russell were both listed as backups to Ty Simpson, with the depth chart often featuring the word 'or' between their names. Mack was typically the first to step in when Simpson was sidelined, including during crucial moments like the Rose Bowl against Indiana when Simpson was injured.
As spring practices continue, the competition between Mack and Russell promises to be a focal point for Alabama fans eager to see who will lead the Crimson Tide offense into the future.
